EVE Online Implements AI Assistance for New Players
CCP Games, the developer behind the intricate universe of EVE Online, has rolled out an artificial intelligence tool named Aura Guidance to better support new players acclimating to the game. This innovative tool aims to streamline the onboarding process by providing instant assistance and reducing the learning curve associated with the game’s elaborate systems.
Development and Functionality
Aura Guidance is built upon an analysis of more than 5.8 million help messages that new players submitted over a nine-month period. This large data set revealed that these inquiries included over 700,000 legitimate questions, with only a small fraction being common queries that were frequently repeated. By leveraging this insight, Aura Guidance has been designed to answer a wide array of questions, enabling new players to feel comfortable seeking help for even the simplest issues directly through the game’s interface.

CCP Games has approached the implementation cautiously, deploying Aura Guidance as an early prototype subject to ongoing development tests. To gauge its effectiveness and reception, the tool is available to only half of new players, with the option to opt-out, while the other half continue with the traditional onboarding experience. This strategic rollout allows the company to compare key performance metrics like player retention and engagement between the two groups.
Community and Cost Considerations
Despite the potential for AI to evoke concerns among gamers wary of technological overreach, CCP Games emphasizes that Aura Guidance is not intended to replace human interaction within the game or to automate creative content. Snorri Árnason, the executive producer at CCP Games, stressed, “Aura Guidance has been carefully designed by our team and is grounded in existing player support data to supplement Rookie Chat, not supersede it.”
Moreover, the cost associated with running Aura Guidance is minimal, likened to the annual energy consumption of a small European household—a negligible amount compared to the power used by the game servers themselves.
Closing Thoughts from the Creative Director
Bergur Finnbogason, the creative director at CCP Games, expressed optimism about the tool’s potential to enhance the gaming experience for newcomers. “Aura Guidance is an opportunity to drastically improve the way players find information and reduce friction for new capsuleers taking their first jumps into New Eden,” Finnbogason explained. Through this AI tool, newcomers can receive immediate, accurate answers, drawn from a robust database of former player interactions, simplifying their initial engagement with the game’s complex world.
