In Brief
- Moonfrost will transition from a web3-integrated game to a traditional PC game on Steam, removing all blockchain elements.
- A new web3-focused platform, Frost Arcade, will be introduced, providing a streamlined gaming experience with existing Moonfrost web3 assets.
- The internal team will be divided to focus separately on the traditional Moonfrost PC game and the new Frost Arcade platform.
Moonfrost’s Strategic Pivot
On November 5, the developers of Moonfrost, a cozy farming RPG, announced a significant change in the game’s development direction. Initially launched in early access with web3 integration through Open Loot, Moonfrost will now proceed as a traditional PC game on Steam, entirely devoid of blockchain technology. This decision came just two days after the conclusion of Moonfrost’s Halloween-themed Dahlia Derby event. The shift entails the elimination of NFTs, cryptocurrencies, and any form of crypto from the game, despite these elements being integral to the game originally.

Frost Arcade: A New Beginning for Web3 Fans
While traditional gaming enthusiasts might welcome Moonfrost’s removal from blockchain complexities, the development team also revealed plans for Frost Arcade. This new internet browser-based platform is tailored exclusively towards a pure web3 gaming experience. Frost Arcade is set to leverage the speed and simplicity required by the blockchain community, concentrating on arcade-style, shorter gaming sessions. It promises multiplayer functionalities, PvP, co-op modes, leaderboards, and community events optimized for quick delivery and interactivity.
Continued Utility for Web3 Assets
For players who have invested in Moonfrost’s web3 universe through NFTs or in-game currencies, their assets will transition into Frost Arcade. Utilizable items such as collectibles and currencies will maintain their value and purpose across the new platform, ensuring that investments persist in having a tangible application.
Leadership and Organizational Changes
To accommodate these shifts, the Moonfrost team is reallocating its leadership roles. Ric Moore, previously co-CEO, will now head the Frost Arcade project, focusing on its web3 game development. Simultaneously, Gina Nelson, co-CEO and Art Director, will concentrate on bringing the traditional version of Moonfrost to the Steam audience.
Future of Gameplay
In October, ahead of these changes, Ric Moore critically evaluated the traditional play-to-earn model, citing its unsustainable nature due to inflationary implications and poor token performance. He proposed a “Risk-to-Earn” model, which could potentially influence Frost Arcade’s economic design. This model, likened to poker, involves players paying to enter games with payouts distributed amongst participants, ensuring a more sustainable and engaging economic environment.
Community Backlash
The announcement has not been without controversy. Several members of the Moonfrost community expressed their disappointment and frustration on social media, especially those who had actively participated in the recent web3 events. Accusations of misleading practices and unfulfilled promises have surfaced, reflecting the complexities and risks associated with pivoting a game’s foundational mechanics.
