Forgotten Runiverse, the free-to-play fantasy MMORPG inspired by the Forgotten Runes universe and built on Ronin Network, has been taken offline until further notice, according to a message shared by the development team with its community.
In a statement addressed to players, referred to as “Wizards,” the team confirmed that all servers would be shut down at the end of the day, citing mounting financial and operational challenges that made it unsustainable to continue running the game in its current live state. While the decision marks a major pause for the project, the developers emphasized that this is not the end of the Runiverse.
“We are not abandoning the Runiverse,” the team stated, explaining that the intention is to return in the future with stronger foundations, better resources, and a higher-quality experience aligned with the community’s expectations.
A Strong Start, Met by Harsh Realities
Despite the shutdown, the team highlighted the scale of what Forgotten Runiverse managed to achieve during its beta and launch phases. Over 250,000 real players explored the world, with peak concurrency exceeding 7,000 users. For many involved, those moments of seeing the world come alive at scale represented the true potential of the project.
However, the team acknowledged that while they initially overcame several obstacles, the long-term costs of maintaining a live MMORPG environment eventually outweighed what was financially viable.
Player Data Preserved, Future Updates Promised
Importantly for players, the developers confirmed that all account progress and player data will be securely preserved during the downtime. The game will remain inaccessible while the team evaluates next steps, and updates will be shared only when there is meaningful progress to report.
As part of the announcement, the team also extended gratitude to their partners, specifically thanking the Pixels team for their early and ongoing collaboration, describing them as key supporters from the very beginning.
A World at Rest, Not Gone
The tone of the message was reflective rather than final. Rather than framing the shutdown as a closure, the developers positioned it as a period of rest and reassessment.
“The Runiverse isn’t gone, merely resting,” the statement concluded. “We’ll see you again when the time is right.”
For now, Forgotten Runiverse joins a growing list of ambitious Web3 games that captured attention and community passion, but ultimately chose to pause rather than continue under unsustainable conditions. Whether the Runiverse returns stronger remains to be seen, but its impact during its short-lived run has clearly left a mark on its players.
