The Sandbox digital platform has kicked off its Retro Game Jam, encouraging game developers to tap into the charm of classic video games. This initiative, which started accepting entries on November 27, offers an array of rewards for innovative uses of retro game design, melding old-school aesthetics with contemporary gameplay. The submission period concludes on December 23, with a live Twitch event on January 17 to announce the winners.
Prizes Galore for Game Developers
The Sandbox has earmarked significant resources to reward participants. The foremost winner will take home 10,000 $SAND and a Gold CATALYST Pack. The second and third place will receive 8,000 and 5,000 $SAND respectively, along with Silver Packs. Ranking from fourth to tenth will also secure prizes, including various amounts of $SAND and Silver or Bronze Packs. Additionally, up to ten games could receive honorable mentions, each attaining 1,000 $SAND. Games selected for the upcoming Alpha Season will benefit from additional rewards including featured placement in the platform’s content lineup.
Support for Participants and a Focus on Creativity
To assist new entrants, a workshop was conducted on December 5. Each game will be evaluated on its creativity, gameplay, and adherence to retro themes. The first 100 valid submissions will receive a CATALYST Pack to encourage early participation. The Sandbox has also made available its Game Maker templates and version 0.11 asset libraries, providing developers with the tools needed to create engaging and thematic games.
Holiday Festivities with Season’s Greetings 2025
Following closely on the heels of the Retro Game Jam is The Sandbox’s Season’s Greetings 2025. This holiday-themed NFT Advent calendar launched on December 1, allowing players to unlock a new game each day until December 31. Each game offers a seasonal NFT designed by renowned artists. The culmination of this event is the unlocking of a Cozy Yéti Avatar on December 24, a collectible character obtainable by completing the final quest.
