Ubisoft Unveils New AI-Powered Game “Teammates”
Ubisoft has launched a new game titled “Teammates,” which integrates generative AI to create a more immersive gameplay experience. This development follows Ubisoft’s previous Neo NPC experiment and aims to further incorporate natural speech interactions within its games.
Game Design and AI Integration
“Teammates” is set in a dystopian future where players undertake a first-person shooter mission to locate five missing team members inside an enemy base. The game features three AI-driven characters: Jaspar, an AI voice assistant, and two NPC squad members, Sofia and Pablo. Jaspar is equipped to assist players by highlighting enemies, narrating lore, altering game settings, and pausing gameplay through voice commands. Similarly, Sofia and Pablo interact dynamically with the player, following orders and engaging in dialogues.
According to Ubisoft, this AI technology not only processes environmental and contextual information but also adapts instantly to voice inputs and player actions. An illustrative scenario shows players commanding their AI teammates to strategically move and engage enemies verbally, even before they are armed.
Feedback and Future Potential
“Today we’re unveiling Teammates, an AI-driven research project exploring how new tech can deepen the player experience,” announced Ubisoft in a recent social media post. The company has conducted extensive playtests with hundreds of players to gather feedback and refine the system. Ubisoft’s ultimate goal is to enhance interaction capabilities and enable richer storytelling, while preserving the essential role of human creativity in game design.
Reflecting on the use of AI in the gaming industry, Ubisoft’s Narrative Director Virginie Mosser shared, “At first, I had the same concerns as many others. But I discovered that it’s the exact opposite of removing the human from the process.” She explained that while the AI allows NPCs to improvise, the creative team still controls the narrative boundaries and character motivations. “They can improvise, but we still set the rules and direct the story and characters,” Mosser added.
This AI implementation by Ubisoft signifies a notable stride in game development, aiming to strike a balance between technological innovation and human artistic influence.
