In Brief:
- CCP Games is shifting its EVE Frontier game development from the EVM testnet to the Sui blockchain.
- The decision entails redoing some of the existing work on the game to enable new features like native account abstraction and enhanced security.
- Sui’s object-centric model aligns well with EVE Frontier’s needs, enabling a more moddable, secure, and player-immersive environment.
In an unexpected development, CCP Games announced that the space survival game EVE Frontier, which is still under development, will move its platform from the EVM testnet to the Sui blockchain. This strategic pivot is aimed at leveraging Sui’s advanced features to enhance the gaming experience.
EVE Frontier’s migration to Sui involves significant changes. The game’s architecture on Sui differs from that of EVM as it utilizes the Move programming language instead of Solidity. This transition requires CCP Games to adapt its existing work, including porting the current founder access build of the game to the new platform.
One of the new capabilities Sui offers includes zkLogin for native account abstraction, which simplifies user logins and allows businesses to sponsor transaction fees. This move is expected to enhance user experience and security, thereby supporting CCP Games’ ambition to build a game universe that extends beyond current standards.
Furthermore, Sui is anticipated to be a more fitting environment for EVE Frontier due to its object-centric approach, closely mirroring the game’s item-centric system. This compatibility is essential for CCP Games, which aims to develop a moddable universe where both third-party and first-party developers can equally expand the game world.
CEO of CCP Games, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, expressed his enthusiasm about the new platform, stating: “Since inception, our mission has been to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life. With EVE Frontier, we are pushing that ambition further than ever before: building a player moddable universe, bound by its own digital physics, that can outlive us all. As we dug into how Sui is architected, we came across so many familiar concepts, such as how their object-centric approach neatly matches our historic item-centric approach, enabling billions of objects/items, all placed by players, shaping a living universe. For us, Sui offered the unique alignment of architecture, security, and user experience. Together, we’re building a world that can truly stand the test of time.”
In addition to adopting the Sui blockchain, EVE Frontier will integrate other Sui-based tools such as the decentralized storage platform Walrus and the secure onchain data provider Seal to bolster its infrastructure.
The development of EVE Frontier on Sui is anticipated to continue for several years, with the game company focusing on maximizing the composability of its ecosystem to enhance asset ownership and transactions, which are now expected to achieve sub-second finality due to Sui’s parallel transaction execution.
