It’s official: we are finally going to uncover all the secrets of the expanded world of “Stranger Things” in the upcoming fifth and final season, particularly concerning the Upside Down.
In a detailed interview with Variety, co-creator and showrunner Ross Duffer revealed that the main objective of the final season is to explain “what the Upside Down really is.” Ross, alongside his twin brother Matt Duffer, acknowledged that over the seasons, they debated whether to share this information and ultimately decided, “we have to do it now!”
However, Matt emphasized that they are not interested in “constantly expanding what could become an absurdly complicated mythology” after the series concludes. Although a spin-off series is in the works, they intend for that story to “live in a somewhat different world,” while still maintaining “connective tissue,” according to Ross.
The brothers strive to keep the story coherent and straightforward. They have managed to make all five seasons fit together seamlessly. “We don’t feel like we’ve left any story behind — everything connects,” Ross explained.
Matt stated, “We’re doing every last thing we ever wanted to do with the Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer, Vecna, the Upside Down, Hawkins, and these characters. This is a complete story. It’s done.”
The creative team behind “Stranger Things” has dedicated nearly a decade to shaping the show. Since its debut in 2016, the Duffers have focused on delivering a memorable finale for fans. “We’ve spent 10 years on this,” Ross noted. “We’re trying to give 100 percent of our energy to ensure we land this plane. So, no thoughts are going anywhere else right now.”
“Stranger Things” Season 5 will premiere on Netflix in three parts:
- Volume 1 arrives on November 26 (four episodes)
- Volume 2 releases at Christmas (three episodes)
- The finale debuts on New Year’s Eve, December 31.
