Goku‘s first statement about his own age is wrong. He tells Bulma he’s 14. He’s 12.
Not a lie. He just can’t count. The boy raised alone in the mountains never learned that 12 comes after 11, and it takes lessons with Master Roshi before he can get his own birthday in the right order.
That mistake is a decent warning for everything that follows. Between the multi-year gaps, the deaths, and the Hyperbolic Time Chamber quietly adding years to a body without adding them to the calendar, Goku’s age is one of the hardest numbers in the franchise to hold onto. Add Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Daima and the arithmetic gets worse.
But the series hands you enough dates, birthdays and stated time skips to rebuild the whole thing. Here’s where every major saga lands.
The kid who couldn’t count
The Emperor Pilaf saga is the first saga in Dragon Ball, and it’s Goku’s first hunt for the Dragon Balls.
He’s 12 there, whatever he tells Bulma.
He’s still 12 when he enters the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and ends up across the ring from Master Roshi in the final.
Then a full year passes before the Dragon Balls are used again, which puts him at 13 for the Red Ribbon Army saga.
Worth noting how much of the franchise is downstream of what a 13-year-old does here. The Android saga and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero both build on it.
Three years off-screen, then Tien
With the Red Ribbon Army beaten and the Four Star Dragon Ball back in hand, Goku goes off to train for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Three years disappear in the gap.
He’s 16 when he fights Tien. Almost immediately after the tournament ends, the teenage version of him gets pulled into the war with Demon King Piccolo, the first time Goku is genuinely fighting to save the world rather than to test himself.
King Piccolo’s answer to his own death is a child, and dealing with that child costs Goku another three years, this time training under Kami.
So he’s 19 when he beats Piccolo at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and then, pointedly, lets him live. That fight closes out the Dragon Ball era and sets the tone for Dragon Ball Z and everything after it.
Twenty-four and about to die
Five years sit between the end of Dragon Ball and the start of Dragon Ball Z. Raditz lands, the Saiyan Saga starts, and Goku is 24.
He dies in that fight. Roughly a year of afterlife training follows before he’s brought back.
By the time Vegeta and Nappa show up he’s 25, and he stays 25 for the entire Frieza Saga.
The chamber breaks the math
Two years after the Namek Saga, Goku is back on Earth and meeting Future Trunks, who arrives with a warning about the Androids.
Three more years pass before that threat actually shows up, which makes him 30 on the calendar.
And then he steps into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. One year of outside time, more than that on his body, and he ends the Cell Saga physically 31.
Which is the point where his chronological age and his lived age stop agreeing, and never quite line up again.
Seven years dead
After Gohan beats Cell, seven years go by. Goku spends all of them dead and, being Goku, training.
He’s revived near the end of the Buu Saga at a chronological 38.
You wouldn’t guess it looking at him. Saiyans age differently from humans, and seven years spent dead did nothing to his face.
Forty-two, and chasing a god
Dragon Ball Super replaced the non-canon Dragon Ball GT, and it opens the way this franchise always opens. With a jump.
Four years, specifically, which puts Goku at 42 for the Battle of Gods saga.
His goal there is Super Saiyan God, half because Beerus will destroy the Earth otherwise and half because he wants to know what it feels like.
Everything Super does afterward is built on that arc.
One year later Frieza comes back, and Goku is 43.
The Universe 6 tournament follows soon after, and then Goku and Vegeta log three years inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Their bodies feel it. The calendar outside doesn’t move.
The Future Trunks Saga arrives not long after that, with his chronological age sitting right where it was.
And then he’s a first-grader again
Dragon Ball Daima slots in after Kid Buu goes down and before Super starts, and the show tells you exactly where it sits by staging Trunks’ ninth birthday on the first anniversary of Kid Buu’s defeat. One year past the Buu Saga. Goku is chronologically 39.
His body is a separate conversation. Like Dragon Ball GT, Daima shrinks him with the Dragon Balls, except Gomah doesn’t simply wish Goku young again the way Pilaf did. Gomah wishes Goku and his friends down into first-graders.
So the man is 39 and the boy on screen is seven years old at most, wearing the same face he had the day he told Bulma he was 14.
