Pixels
What is Pixels?
Pixels is a free-to-play, browser-based farming and social MMO rendered in 16-bit pixel art. Players create a character, work a plot of land, gather and process resources, and level up separate professions inside a persistent shared world, mixing farming-sim routines with RuneScape-style skill progression. The game first launched in 2021 on Polygon and migrated to Ronin, the Ethereum-linked chain built by Sky Mavis, in September 2023. Its PIXEL token also exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, which is why the game is commonly listed under both networks.
How to play Pixels
Pixels runs entirely in a web browser at play.pixels.xyz, and no wallet is needed to begin: an account can be created with an email address, or by connecting a Ronin wallet through the mobile app or browser extension. New players start on a Speck, a small free public plot, where they plant, water and harvest crops. Actions consume energy that regenerates over time, so progress is paced rather than continuous. Beyond farming there is cooking, crafting and resource gathering such as mining and woodcutting, each with its own experience track, alongside quests, guilds, player markets and privately owned land where visitors can farm in exchange for a share of the output.
Pixels tokenomics & earning
PIXEL is the game's on-chain token, with a maximum supply of 5 billion. It is spent on VIP memberships, guild creation, cosmetics, pets and various upgrades, acting as the economy's main sink, while softer in-game currencies and crafted goods circulate through everyday play. VIP status, bought with PIXEL in-game, is what allows a player to withdraw PIXEL to a Ronin wallet, and it also unlocks extra inventory space and gated areas. Land is represented by Farm Land NFTs, giving owners control over layout, production and tenants.
Is Pixels worth playing?
Entry is free and the game is approachable without any crypto knowledge, but the loop is time-intensive and much of the meaningful economy sits behind land ownership or VIP. Any earnings depend on token prices and seasonal reward rules, both of which change.
True ownership of unique digital pixels that can be bought, traded, and collected on-chain
Blockchain-backed transparency, security, and authenticity for all in-game transactions
Competitive challenges and building mechanics against other players
Multi-chain support across Ethereum and Ronin, spanning casual, NFT adventure, and NFT MMORPG genres
Collectible-driven model means progress can depend on purchasing or trading pixels
Ethereum-based activity exposes players to network fees and cost variability
Broad genre mix (casual, adventure, MMORPG) may make the core experience hard to pin down
Publicly available details are limited to high-level descriptions, with little concrete information on progression or economy
Our verdict on Pixels
Pixels is a browser-based farming and social MMO in 16-bit pixel art, and the farming half is only the surface: underneath sits a RuneScape-style skill grid where cooking, mining, woodcutting and crafting each carry their own experience track. It started on Polygon in 2021, moved to Ronin in September 2023, and keeps a PIXEL token as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, which is why it shows up under two chains.
What works is the on-ramp. An email address is enough to start; no wallet, no seed phrase, no crypto vocabulary. New players get a free public plot called a Speck and can plant, water and harvest immediately, and the world is genuinely populated — guilds, player markets, and privately owned land where an owner takes a cut of what visitors grow.
What does not work as well is the pacing and the paywall shape. Actions burn energy that only refills over time, so sessions end when the meter does rather than when interest does, which suits a check-in-twice-a-day habit far more than a long sitting. More pointedly, withdrawing PIXEL requires VIP membership bought with PIXEL, and the productive end of the economy runs through Farm Land NFTs — so the free tier is a real game, but a walled one.
It fits players who want a low-friction, social idle-farming routine and are relaxed about seasonal reward rules changing under them. Anyone treating it as income should note that both token price and payout rules move.
