One of these names you saw coming. The other is a debut.
A fresh leak points to Supergirl and Batwoman both appearing on the roster of the still-unannounced Injustice 3. Supergirl is the obvious one. She had a starring role in Injustice 2, a game that’s now nine years old. Batwoman is the curveball: assuming the leak holds up, this would be her first appearance in a mainline Injustice game.
The Batwoman problem
Here’s the wrinkle. Batwoman (Kate Kane) dies in the canon Injustice comics. So either someone else has taken up the Batwoman mantle for Injustice 3, Kate Kane didn’t die after all, or the game retcons the events of the book.
Take your pick. This is a superhero story, and nobody stays dead forever.
There’s a fourth option, and it’s the one worth watching. Injustice 3 may not continue the story told across Injustice and Injustice 2 at all. It could be a reboot telling a different story entirely. NetherRealm’s other fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat, has done exactly that multiple times, and with nearly a decade between Injustice 2 and whatever comes next, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise here either.
The open secret nobody will confirm
Publisher Warner Bros. hasn’t announced another Injustice game, even though its existence is an open secret at this point. That could change soon. Paramount looks like it’s finally going to get the green light to complete its $110 billion merger with Warner Bros., and that may bring some clarity to the company’s video game plan, which we know also includes Hogwarts Legacy 2 and a new Batman game from Arkham developer Rocksteady.
My guess: Injustice 3, or whatever it ends up being called, gets announced at The Game Awards in December, with a release set for in or around April 2027.
Where Mortal Kombat fits
NetherRealm isn’t only working on Injustice. In May, development chief Ed Boon said another Mortal Kombat game was in development, which also didn’t come as much of a surprise. That confirmation followed 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1 selling 8 million copies, just over half of Mortal Kombat 11’s total of 15 million copies sold, as of 2022. Perhaps this new Mortal Kombat game lands after Injustice 3.
The studio’s release history tells you why fans expected an Injustice game sooner. Injustice: Gods Among Us launched in 2013. Injustice 2 followed in 2017. NetherRealm then released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, and for a while it looked like the studio would alternate between the two series. Instead, the next game was another Mortal Kombat, the soft reboot that is Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
Injustice fans have been waiting since 2017. If the leak is right, at least two of the characters they’ll be waiting for are Supergirl and a Batwoman who, on paper, shouldn’t be alive.
