Medieval Empires

What is Medieval Empires?

Medieval Empires is a multiplayer online strategy game built on the Polygon blockchain by MoonGaming, a studio founded in 2021 and based in Dubai. It is set at the end of the 13th century in the territory of modern Türkiye, and draws its lore from the historical figure Ertuğrul Gazi, leader of the Kayi Turkic tribe. The setting places the Kayi against other powers of the period, including crusader forces associated with the future Edward I of England, and the Mongols. The game is developed in Unity and is planned for Windows PC and Mac alongside mobile builds for iOS and Android, with a browser-based "Show Room" experience built using WebAssembly and WebGL.

How to play Medieval Empires

Players settle a city and expand it by constructing and upgrading buildings, researching technologies, gathering and crafting resources, recruiting heroes, and raising armies. Roles are flexible: a player can develop primarily as a warrior, a clan leader, or a merchant, and clans can be formed for cooperative play. Progression is driven by story quests, neutral tasks, and daily missions. The journey begins in a PvE zone, with more aggressive PvE and PvP modes presented as optional rather than mandatory.

Medieval Empires tokenomics & earning

The economy uses two assets: Silver, an in-game currency, and MEE, a utility token on Polygon with a total supply of 3,000,000,000, distributed through public sales in December 2022. MEE is used for premium content, upgrades and skills, land rent, and player-to-player taxes, and carries voting rights. Land is sold as NFTs, and depending on tier a land NFT contains between 4 and 16 city slots, which the owner may rent to other players. Land held this way cannot be conquered or taken from its owner, and owners can tax players who build, gather, craft, or loot on their plot.

Is Medieval Empires worth playing?

The design favours players who enjoy long-form city-building and empire management rather than fast action, and the ownership layer mainly benefits landholders, since renting and taxation depend on owning a land NFT. Feature availability and build status have shifted since launch, so the official website and whitepaper are the appropriate places to confirm what is currently playable.

thumb_up Pros
Combines empire building, army training, and PvP battles for strategic depth
Player-driven economy with resource trading and tradable in-game assets
Social and competitive layers via alliances and tournaments
Runs on Polygon, a low-fee chain suited to frequent in-game transactions
Blockchain-backed transactions add transparency and security to ownership
thumb_down Cons
Medieval fantasy empire-builder is a crowded, familiar genre with little described differentiation
Requires blockchain and wallet familiarity, raising the barrier for mainstream players
Competitive PvP and territory expansion can favor players who spend more on NFTs
Locked to a single chain (Polygon), limiting access for players on other networks
Public details are thin — no clarity on token economics, costs to start, or roadmap

Our verdict on Medieval Empires

Medieval Empires is a Unity-built strategy MMO on Polygon from Dubai studio MoonGaming, set in late-13th-century Anatolia and drawn from the history of Ertuğrul Gazi and the Kayi Turkic tribe, pitched against Mongol and crusader powers. In a genre that defaults to generic fantasy, that specific historical frame is the most distinctive thing about it.

What works is the game sitting underneath the token layer. You settle a city and grow it through buildings, research, resource gathering, crafting, heroes and armies, and you can lean toward warrior, clan leader or merchant rather than being funnelled down one path. The opening stretch is PvE, with harsher PvE and PvP treated as optional — a gentler on-ramp than most on-chain strategy titles offer.

What works less well is the asymmetry the land layer creates. Land is sold as NFTs holding between 4 and 16 city slots, cannot be conquered, and lets owners collect rent plus taxes from anyone who builds, gathers, crafts or loots there. Tenants supply the effort; holders collect the yield. MEE, a 3 billion-supply token sold publicly in December 2022, gates premium content, upgrades and voting.

It suits patient city-builders comfortable with landlord economics. Check the official site for current build status first — availability has shifted since launch.

This is our own editorial assessment. We do not score games — ratings come from players.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started and what do I actually do in Medieval Empires?
You begin in a passive PvE area where you build and develop your own town while trading, fighting and forging alliances with other players. Progression is driven by daily missions, general tasks and story missions set in late-13th-century Anatolia, following Ertugrul Gazi of the Kayi tribe against Edward I and the English Crusaders.
Do I need a crypto wallet or to hold tokens to play?
Since the Open Beta that launched on 14 May 2024, players can enter the game without an invitation and without any compulsory staking of $MEE. A connected wallet with staked MEE is only required if you want the token-gated benefits such as VIP status and land access.
What is the in-game token and what is it used for?
The project uses two tokens: Silver, the in-game economy currency, and MEE, the utility token. MEE is used for premium content and unlocks in-game benefits such as VIP status, land access and daily rewards, and it also carries voting power over game rules.
How do players earn in Medieval Empires?
Players connect a wallet and stake the required amount of MEE to qualify for daily rewards, VIP status and land access. Inside the game, Silver functions as the economy currency you accumulate and spend through building, trading and other activities.
Is Medieval Empires still active and is it worth playing?
The game opened to all players in Open Beta in May 2024, and the team has continued expanding it with additional factions planned beyond the Turkic Tribes and English Crusaders, including the Mongols, Byzantines and Mamluks. It is best suited to players who enjoy long-term town-building and alliance strategy with a historical setting; check the official site at medievalempires.com for the current development status.

Land is an integral part of Medieval Empires' economy and gameplay. The land within the game is divided into 6 tiers with the plots within each tier carrying distinctive features and resource generation capabilities. Each Land NFT is associated with a location on the world map, made up of geographically accurate provinces, divided among multiple counties that will be part of this collection. While Tier 0 is dedicated for onboarding the players, the counties from Tiers 1 to 5 can be bought as NFTs. Each tier carries certain capacity of intrinsic qualities such as Production boost, Time Boost and Unlocking units and decorations. Along with the intrinsic features for the lands in each tier, the landowners will also get the opportunity to upgrade the land with the help of in-game NFT structures. The in-game revenue can also be collected by renting out plots on the owned land and collecting tax from other players who choose to live and play on these counties.
