Zone Nine has commenced its first major playtesting phase. This game, which merges elements of player vs. player and environment conflicts, is built on the Ethereum-based Ancient8 platform, utilizing the capacities of Unreal Engine 5. As a pioneering project on the Ancient8, Zone Nine seeks to blend high-stakes esports action with blockchain-driven asset ownership.

The closed playtest, named Zone Nine: Nihilation, invites participants to delve into the game’s foundational systems, encompassing team-based combat and survival strategies against both human opponents and AI-controlled zombies. Participants engage in matches where two teams of five players each vie to score 999 points through various task completions, while managing a shared pool of 20 lives. Strategic elements are heightened by the need to manage hunger, thirst, and stamina—core survival mechanics that influence combat efficiency.
The playtest also features an array of environmental challenges including a real-time day-night cycle and changing weather conditions that tactically affect gameplay. For instance, fog can reduce visibility, while rainstorms and blizzards alter movement speeds and resource consumption rates.
Players can explore hazardous zones marked on maps for high-level challenges and rewards. The game provides several utility points, like respawn locations and checkpoints for item deposits which add layers to the strategic gameplay. The playtest is equipped with a variety of weapons, gear, and consumables, tiered by rarity and effectiveness.

Zombified foes vary from standard wanderers to formidable bosses like the Meat Spider and Meat Tank, each presenting unique challenges and rewards. Zone Nine’s design allows for both hosting and joining custom matches, supporting diverse player engagement.
The application phase for this playtest closed on October 21, after opening briefly this month to gather a varied player base that can offer extensive feedback. The game’s developers have embraced a transparent approach, inviting constructive critiques to refine gameplay, despite acknowledging the presence of numerous bugs at this stage.
This playtest session, integral to Zone Nine’s development, underscores the commitment to leveraging player feedback to craft a thoroughly engaging gaming experience. As it stands, further playtests are anticipated, though dates remain unannounced, maintaining player anticipation for the next stages of this innovative gaming venture.
