In Brief:
- Analyst Piper Sandler estimates Grand Theft Auto VI could sell over 45 million copies on launch day, nearly triple previous expectations.
- The projection is based on fan engagement metrics from the r/GTA6 subreddit, linking traffic to historical sales data.
- The prediction has raised skepticism due to hardware limitations and previous sales records in the franchise.
Launch day sales forecast
Piper Sandler has forecasted that Grand Theft Auto VI may achieve over 45 million copies sold on its first day, with the central estimate around 46 million. This figure is significantly higher than earlier predictions of 20 to 25 million units, drawing skepticism from industry watchers.
Methodology behind the estimate
Instead of relying on console install bases or preorders, Piper Sandler’s analysis connected subreddit activity with sales performance from previous AAA titles. The firm calculated that visitor counts to r/GTA6 closely mirrored launch sales trends, yielding a 94 percent correlation in historical contexts.
Two models were applied to this traffic data. The first assumed the subreddit would reach around 1.3 million weekly visitors by launch, applying a 35x sales multiplier to yield approximately 46 million copies. The second model began with current visitor levels of about 870,000, using a higher 53x multiplier for the same result. Both models converged on the 46 million figure.
Criticism and concerns
Critics have expressed doubts over the feasibility of such sales numbers. With Grand Theft Auto VI launching only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S—approximately 128 million combined units—the projection implies more than a third of current-gen console owners would need to purchase the game on day one.
This scenario seems unrealistic given historical performance; Grand Theft Auto V sold around 11.21 million copies on its launch day in 2013. The limitations of the current-gen audience are also noteworthy, as it’s about 20 million units smaller than the potential market for Grand Theft Auto V.
Financial implications
Despite the skepticism, the projection has had financial ramifications. At an estimated price of $70 per copy, 46 million units could lead to a gross revenue of around $3.2 billion on the first day alone. Following the forecast, shares of Take-Two Interactive jumped over 6 percent, reflecting investor optimism.
Release date confirmed
Grand Theft Auto VI remains scheduled for release on November 19, following delays and a decade-long wait since GTA V. Community engagement surrounding the title has been significant, evidenced by the massive viewership of its trailers.
While a PC version is anticipated no earlier than late 2027, GTA VI has already set a high bar for launch expectations, with the opening day poised to test the limits of Reddit-based forecasting.
