Almost nobody has seen Signal One. That’s about to change on September 4, when the 87-minute sci-fi mystery lands on Hulu with David Thewlis in the cast.
If the name doesn’t land immediately, the face will. Thewlis played Remus Lupin across the Wizarding World, starting with 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and closing out his run in Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
He’s got plenty of range beyond the werewolf professor, too. Naked and Kingdom of Heaven both sit on the resume.
What the movie is actually about
The 2026 film follows a computer scientist who takes a job with a tech billionaire, working on a project that could change humanity for good. That’s the setup, and the film keeps its cards close after that.
Thewlis isn’t carrying it alone. Isabelle Fuhrman, Dennis Quaid and Josh Hutcherson round out the cast, which means two former Hunger Games stars share the frame with a Harry Potter alum.
Why you’ve never heard of it
Here’s the part that explains the near-total silence around this one. Signal One debuted at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival in May, then got a tiny theatrical premiere in early June.
Tiny is doing real work in that sentence. The release was so small the film doesn’t have a box office total, and it never expanded internationally.
So the Hulu date matters more than a streaming date usually does. It’s the first time the movie has a shot at an audience that isn’t measured in festival badges.
The reviews are on its side
There aren’t many of them, which follows from the release strategy. But Signal One holds an 80% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, so most critics who did see it came away positive.
The praise clusters around two things: the premise itself, and the character work, which critics credited to strong performances. The Popcornmeter sits at 67%, and that’s the number Hulu viewers will move one way or the other.
Picking up a streaming platform at all is a decent signal for a film that barely played anywhere. Enough people noticed.
