Ratfield is a city with an underground racing scene, a PDA racing forum full of people who want to beat you, and spoilers on everything with wheels. That’s the pitch for Heatwarped, and if it sounds like a game you played on a PS2 in 2004, that’s the point.

Developed by Sealime, Heatwarped is headed to Steam at some vague future point. No release window. No date. But there’s a demo you can play right now, which counts for more than a trailer ever will.

What the game actually says it is

Here’s the rub, straight from the description: “Ratfield sits atop an underground racing scene. Conquer the streets by warping the odds in your favor. Customize your ride to the max, meet up with other racers from your pda’s racing forum to compete, and build respect.”

The setting is specifically the 2000s, back when underground racing was breaking into the mainstream. Car spoilers galore. A soundtrack built around “night driving.” The reference points aren’t subtle and they aren’t meant to be.

The demo is winning people over

Fans playing it now keep landing on the same comparison: it controls like a classic PS2 racer. They mean that as a compliment.

The visuals aren’t going to go toe to toe with a major studio, and nobody’s pretending otherwise. But the gameplay is clearly well-crafted, and the controls are responsive and tight. That’s the part that’s hard to fake, and it’s the part that decides whether a racing game is worth your evening.

This could be a second coming of PS2-era racing if everything works out.

Why a 23-year-old game still casts this long a shadow

Need for Speed Underground turns 23 this year, and it left a huge mark on street racing. The Fast and the Furious had arrived a few years earlier and stoked the flames of street racing across almost every medium. That film series is still going. The genre in games? Not so much, even on Steam.

Every so often a major franchise re-emerges or something original pops up. It isn’t a genre you see every month.

Underground still holds its place with fans because of its huge following, high sales numbers and stellar reviews. You could race the street traditionally, but also mess with more out-there parameters like drifting and drag racing, while franchise modes like Knockout came back. It’s one of the easiest games to recommend in the series, and personality is the reason.

The official series is stuck in neutral

Street racing came back in 2022 with Need for Speed Unbound, still the most recent game in the series. Then EA readjusted developer Criterion Games’ priorities, and the whole franchise is basically in limbo.

Which leaves the tradition to games like Heatwarped. A demo, a PDA forum full of rivals and a soundtrack meant for driving at night.
