One block at a time.
Plenty of us built impossible, structurally unsound Lego cities as kids. Soon you’ll get to do it again, in video game form.
Lego Skylines was announced today at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. The blocky city builder is coming to Steam, PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. No release window yet.
The studio behind it has a complicated recent history
Iceflake Studios is developing the project. Genre fans will know the name: it’s the team currently running Cities: Skylines II.
Paradox Interactive, the long-time publisher of that franchise, removed original creator Colossal Order from work on the sequel after a contentious launch that left a lot of bad blood between the studio and the community. Paradox is publishing this one too.
What the trailer actually shows
The Lego Skylines trailer has all the colorful joy you’d expect from a game carrying the legendary toy brand, paired with the standard furniture of a city builder: residential house plots, and a pressing need for a fire brigade.
After such a long, difficult run on the struggle bus, it’s good to see a fresh chapter opening up for this franchise. Iceflake’s work so far has gone over well with the Cities: Skylines faithful, and that goodwill is the thing worth carrying into Lego Skylines.
