- Distorted Essence feeds five character stats: Attack, Defense, HP, Hit and Speed. The update also adds 25 new Collections.
- Adventure Boss is one of the game’s main sinks for AP potions and NCG, and its reward structure has been retuned repeatedly since it went live.
Nine Chronicles reworked Adventure Boss and introduced a new boss drop, Distorted Essence, that players collect to raise five stats: Attack, Defense, HP, Hit and Speed.
The team announced the change on X. “The Adventure Boss has received a major rework!” the post said, telling players to “Defeat powerful bosses to collect Distorted Essence and strengthen your journey.”

The same update ships 25 new Collections.
The announcement didn’t specify how much Distorted Essence each stat point costs, whether gains are capped, or whether the material carries across seasons. It also didn’t name which bosses drop it.
How the mode works
Adventure Boss runs on player money rather than a fixed schedule. A new boss becomes available every two days, but nothing starts until someone places a bounty, and only players who’ve reached Monster Collection Level 3 (5,000 NCG) can do that, according to the game’s documentation.
Once the bounty lands, the boss is revealed and a four-hour window opens. Everyone else piles in.
Players spend AP potions across 20 floors, challengeable in increments of five. First clears grant unique rewards. Repeat clears accumulate points toward contribution rewards, and the more AP potions the playerbase burns, the larger the final pool gets.
That split between the two player types is the design’s core. Operating users put up the bounty and open the content. Participating users fight and take a share of the spoils based on what they contributed.
A mode that keeps getting retuned
Distorted Essence is the latest in a long run of changes to what Adventure Boss pays out.
The mode introduced Emerald Dust, which summons Grimoire equipment, an eighth gear slot with abilities spanning attack, defense and more. It also carries exclusive runes boosting Cri, Hit and Spd that cost fewer crystals and less NCG to upgrade. Grimoire is often available only as a seasonal reward.
First-clear Yggdrasil stat runes on the upper floors were updated, and four Mythic-grade runes were added, each keyed to the type of Adventure Boss in rotation. Mythic runes are capped at level 150 for balance.
Reward distribution moved off a ranking-based system to one that splits the total pool by contribution. Players now claim individually during the two-week off-season instead of receiving payouts in bulk.
Under NCIP-21, seasonal boss selection was changed to exclude bosses that appeared in the previous two rotations.
Collections, meanwhile, have been a recurring vehicle for content drops. A prior version, v200450, added 30 stages covering 471 through 500, Grade 8 Transcendence equipment and new Collections alongside new items and active skills.
Adventure Boss also feeds the game’s pass economy. The Season Pass was renamed while keeping the same functionality, resets monthly and hands out additional rune shards drawn from Adventure Bosses and Monster Collections. One more Grade 8 Transcendent rune was added as both a Monster Collection reward and an Adventure Boss pass reward.
