Give me a character creator and I’ll lose an evening to it. Even in Red Dead Redemption 2, where Rockstar hands you a fixed protagonist in Arthur Morgan, I’m the guy making sure his haircut, beard and outfit are never less than immaculate.
So yes, I get why Red Dead Online still has a grip on people. You build your own outlaw from scratch and then dress them however you want from a large pile of cosmetics. Rockstar Games keeps refilling that wardrobe with new and returning pieces, and that’s a big part of why the game and its online mode are still going eight years later.
This month runs on moonshine
Rockstar rolls out new Red Dead Online events every month, and the September into October stretch is all about Moonshiner Bonuses. On offer: emotes, returning limited-time clothing, 3X RDO$ and XP on the Featured Series, and more.
Rockstar’s pitch says the frontier’s “cities, towns, and outlying fortifications” are “craving the harder stuff.” What that means in practice is simple. Complete Moonshiner Sales and you’ll earn 3X RDO$, Role XP and XP all month long. Tripled payouts and other bonuses also apply to Moonshiner Story Missions, Free Roam Missions and more.
Just logging in gets you something
You also get free stuff for simply showing up. Log into Red Dead Online each week and you’ll pick up unique gifts. The event wraps in early October, but two more rewards are still up for grabs before then.
The Featured Series works the same way. Most of this month’s events have already come and gone, but two are still left. Each one pays out 3X RDO$ and XP.
The good hats are back
This bit is for lapsed players. Some limited-edition clothing is back in stores this month: the Chambliss Corset, Charro Jacket, Leavitt Jacket, Lister Hat and Owanjila Hat. If you missed any of them the first time around, now’s your chance.
Rockstar has also added another Community-Inspired outfit to Red Dead Online. You can buy the pieces from the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalog through Oct. 5.
That’s the September and early October lineup. Once a new event starts, these freebies are gone, so claim them now. I’ll be over at the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. counter buying a hat my outlaw definitely doesn’t need.
