In Brief:

  • EVE Frontier (official site)’s Feral Surge is a week-long event that runs from Tuesday, Oct. 20 to Tuesday, Oct. 27. Players are working toward a shared goal of 20,000 Feral Drone kills.
  • Pilots earn Grace through manufacturing and combat missions, which are tracked in the KEEP Monitor.
  • The event lands partway through Cycle 7: Vestiges, the Sept. 29 update that rebuilt how Feral Drones behave.

EVE Frontier players have until Tuesday, Oct. 27 to destroy 20,000 Feral Drones between them. That’s the community goal of Feral Surge, a week-long event that started Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Every kill counts toward the shared total. Individual pilots earn Grace by completing event missions along the way.

On Oct. 21 the game’s official account reported 5,064 Feral Drones destroyed, with 14,936 left to reach the target.

Crafting comes first

The event has two tracks. Manufacturing missions reward players for producing the weapon, ammunition and protection needed to fight the ferals.

Combat missions follow. Players have to land killing blows on Feral Drones to move through those missions, and they earn more Grace as they reach higher destruction targets.

All Feral Surge missions sit in the KEEP Monitor, which shows each target and tracks a player’s progress through the week. The developer told players to check it before heading out “so you know what to craft first.”

The studio said it will post progress updates on its social channels during the event to show how many ferals remain before the target is reached. The official teaser put it this way: “Complete missions. Earn Grace. Search the wreckage. Every kill counts.”

The sources reviewed for this story don’t say how much Grace players get if the community hits the 20,000 mark.

Ferals that act like players

Feral Surge is the first community kill event since Cycle 7: Vestiges launched Sept. 29. Fenris Creations announced the update on Sept. 24, and it wiped the game world because it changed how the universe is generated and discovered.

Cycle 7 rebuilt the Feral Drones the event now targets. They work under the same knowledge, rules and abilities as players: they can scan, travel, mine, salvage and scavenge, so they compete for many of the same resources.

They also don’t have perfect knowledge of nearby space. The drones detect signatures, interpret what they find and act on what they can work out. Some patrol, some salvage wrecks and others mine asteroids.

The official support guide warns that reckless movement can draw unwanted attention, and that staying hidden can work as well as fighting. It also says Conservator groups may include mining drones, salvage drones and combat escorts.

Fighting them has a cost. According to the guide, encounters with Ferals can expose a player’s Creation to Corruption, the status formerly called Feralization, and it tells players to watch the status effects on their HUD.

Players short on firepower have one fallback. The Small Cutting Laser is mainly a harvesting tool, but it can also damage and destroy Feral Drones.

Grace and earlier events

Grace is the progression currency for the current development phase. Players earn it within a Cycle, and it’s converted into EVE Points when that Cycle ends. The KEEP Monitor sits in the Terminal next to the Broadcast Terminal.

Feral Surge follows the August Dermestid hunt, in which the community had to take down 20 Dermestids together. Every participant in that event received 1,000 Grace.

Cycle 7 also made aim flight the default control scheme, added a skill system for Characters and Shells and let ships dock directly to ports on structures in space. Signatures are now found while traveling instead of being shown upfront.

The studio’s own call to arms for the week was short: “The Frontier moves this week. Be part of it.”
