In Brief:
- Koin Games’ Kickstarter for Origins Trading Card Game – Alpha Edition reached its $500,000 stretch goal two hours after going live on Oct. 27.
- The campaign had a $100,000 goal, which the team said it hit in five minutes. It runs through Dec. 2.
- The Kickstarter is the studio’s last sale of Alpha Edition (first-print) cards, and they’re priced below retail.
Origins Trading Card Game passed the $500,000 stretch goal on its Kickstarter two hours after the campaign opened, Koin Games said.
“We reached our stretch goal of $500k in just 2 hours,” the team said in a post on X. “A big big thank you to every backer!”
THIS IS CRAZY
We reached our stretch goal of $500k in just 2 hours
A big big thank you to every backer!
The campaign, Origins Trading Card Game – Alpha Edition, went live Oct. 27 with a funding goal of $100,000. The team said on X that it reached that “fully funded milestone of $100k in 5 minutes.”
Five times the goal on day one
The Tampa, Florida-based studio set the campaign to run 36 days, closing Dec. 2. That leaves more than a month of pledging after the stretch goal fell.
The Kickstarter page pitches the game as “a competitive digital TCG with error cards, god packs, & digitally graded cards you really own.” In its launch post, the team called it “the first 100% free digital TCG with cards you can own, trade & sell” and urged players to “Secure your Kickstarter exclusive items now.”
The campaign is the last chance to buy Alpha Edition cards. In an AMA recap posted to the game’s Steam community hub, the developers said “The Kickstarter will be priced at a discount to retail and is the last-ever chance to get Alpha Edition (first-print) cards.”
Packs, boxes and a $1 deposit
The sealed digital products are collector packs, booster boxes and booster cases. Each pack holds five Alpha Edition cards with one guaranteed rare. A box contains 24 packs, and a case contains six boxes.
On pricing, the team said in the AMA that the “Target price point is around $4/collector pack (similar to Pokémon/One Piece economics).”
Before launch, players could pay $1 to reserve VIP access. That deposit took 15% off any pledge and gave first access to the Kickstarter-exclusive Alpha Edition set. The studio’s FAQ said the charge was “a pre-registration tied to our Card Party event, not a payment for the Kickstarter itself.”
Free to compete, no NFTs
Koin Games calls the model “free-to-compete.” According to the FAQ, “every player will receive all the base cards that are in the game for free,” and the paid cosmetic variants give no gameplay advantage.
Ownership runs through Steam. The FAQ says, “No, there are zero NFTs in Origins TCG.” Cards from cosmetic packs are “tradable through the Steam Marketplace.”
“Trading runs through the Steam Marketplace and trading API, like for Counter-Strike skins,” the developers said in the AMA recap.
The cards are based on myths, legends and fairy tales from around the world, and matches are built to be fast and tactical. The game is on PC through Steam and on Mac. The team said mobile is planned but that it’s putting Steam stability first.
Timeline
The studio had said the campaign would open alongside Steam Next Fest. “Kickstarter goes live in October, timed with Steam Next Fest,” the AMA recap said.
For Next Fest, Koin Games planned an updated demo build with a deck builder and pack opening, plus an online qualifier tournament. In the recap, the team described it as “a major online qualifier tournament with proper broadcast production, featuring Hearthstone/Marvel Snap creators.”
The recap said “Early Access follows shortly after in November.” The FAQ gives no fixed date for the full release: “The team is targeting Q4 2026. No exact date has been announced yet.”
A playable demo is on Steam now. The FAQ says progress made in the demo carries over to the full game.
