What is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a collectible trading card game in which cards, packs and other assets are blockchain items that players own, trade, rent or burn rather than license from a publisher. The game itself runs on the Hive blockchain, where accounts, card ownership and transfers are recorded on-chain, while its SPS governance token also circulates on other networks including BNB Chain. Cards are organised into sets, and matches are played through the browser client at splinterlands.com against other players' assembled teams.

How to play Splinterlands

Every battle sets a mana cap plus one or more rulesets — modifiers such as Little League, Back To Basics, or the newer Pandamonium, which starts all units in random positions. Players choose a summoner and fill a team of units within that mana budget, then the fight resolves automatically: there is no turn-by-turn input, so team composition and reading the ruleset decide the result. Ranked play is split into two formats, Wild, which permits every card ever released, and Modern, limited to the two most recent sets. New accounts begin in Campaign Mode to earn Foundations cards and unlock Frontier Mode; Modern play and tournaments open after 100 Frontier battles or after buying the $10 Summoner's Spellbook. Battles consume Energy, which regenerates daily and can be topped up with DEC, Glint or Credits.

Splinterlands tokenomics & earning

Two tokens anchor the economy. DEC (Dark Energy Crystals) is the working currency for the shop, marketplace and rentals, and is also what unwanted cards convert into through the burning mechanism, with higher-level, higher-rarity and gold foil cards returning more. SPS (Splintershards) is the governance token: staking it grants votes on proposals and increases battle reward multipliers. Ranked wins pay Glint, spent in the Rewards Shop, along with rating points and staked SPS, and a Modern win yields 50% more Glint than a Wild win. SPS rewards require a Spellbook account, though free accounts can still battle, earn Glint, join guilds and rent cards.
