For Amazon, this was never just a prestige deal. It was the acquisition of arguably the most valuable piece of creative real estate in the entire spy genre, the kind you can mine for movies and TV shows for years.
The franchise that got there first
Amazon’s first Bond project is still in development, and the anticipation is doing exactly what anticipation does. Every rumor about the next actor to play Bond becomes a headline. Every production update becomes a news cycle.
And while Bond looks destined to become one of Prime Video’s defining franchises, the streamer quietly spent years building something remarkably similar. Long before 007 makes his inevitable debut on the platform, Prime Video already has an outstanding espionage series in Jack Ryan.
Based on Tom Clancy’s bestselling novels, the show’s four seasons arrived between 2018 and 2023, with 2026 bringing the feature-length follow-up Jack Ryan: Ghost War. John Krasinski stars as the CIA analyst, and here’s the thing worth noticing: the character has appeared in several successful movies, and the series never leans on that cinematic history to justify itself.
If Amazon eventually turns Bond into a streaming powerhouse, it will almost certainly succeed. But Jack Ryan already proves Prime Video owns the best spy franchise of the modern age.
Grounded work, blockbuster scale
For decades the Bond movies have been the gold standard for cinematic espionage. In streaming and prestige TV, Jack Ryan occupies much the same position. Few original series have combined globe-trotting adventures with grounded action and consistently high production values as effectively.
The show isn’t all style and no substance, either. Instead of leaning on spectacle, it delivers believable intelligence work and layered international conspiracies that make every episode essential viewing.
That balance is the series’ greatest strength, and the reason no streaming spy show realistically comes close. You get the explosive action of the Bond movies or Mission: Impossible without losing the roots in realistic political intrigue.
Every episode carries as much blockbuster-level spectacle as it does tense political thrills. Ryan’s mind is his best weapon and just as necessary to his operational success as his combat skills. That mix makes for espionage storytelling with a flavor few other modern movies or shows in the genre can match.
Bond is joining, not filling a gap
Amazon’s ambition to secure 007’s future makes enormous strategic sense. But if that leads to original exclusive Prime Video content, Bond is arriving at a platform that already mastered the streaming spy formula.
He isn’t plugging a hole in the lineup. He’s joining the service that already delivered arguably the strongest espionage franchise of the streaming era.
Calling Jack Ryan the James Bond of streaming isn’t sensationalism. It’s a bold claim that holds up under scrutiny. Bond may be the gold standard of spy entertainment for many viewers, but the 007 franchise isn’t flawless, and there are plenty of valid criticisms of its cinematic outings despite the British spy’s iconic status.

What Ryan does that 007 can’t
Bond has sometimes struggled to reinvent its classic formula for the modern age. As tastes have veered toward realism, the over-the-top villains and the wide array of gadgets have started to feel dated.
Jack Ryan swaps those increasingly implausible tropes, the ones 007 helped establish in the first place, for grounded intelligence work. The scenarios feel rooted in real-world threats instead of elaborate supervillain plots.
Ryan is also a more rounded protagonist than any version of Bond. Analysis and diplomacy matter as much as combat, and there are no gadgets anywhere in sight. He’s capable in a confrontation, but violence rarely feels like his default answer, unlike Bond, who is famously all too happy to reach into his tuxedo.
That makes his victories land harder, because they’re earned through strategic thinking rather than physical dominance and gizmos that turn every problem into a deus ex machina.
And his team is never set dressing. Jack’s relationships with Greer (Wendell Pierce), November (Michael Kelly) and other recurring allies evolve across multiple seasons instead of resetting with every new adventure. Bond will always define cinematic espionage. Ryan just does more of the genre’s actual work, and remembers who helped him do it.
