Blockchain Fundamentals

Blockchain. A distributed database replicated across thousands of computers. Every transaction is recorded permanently in sequential blocks linked cryptographically. No single company controls it. Records cannot be altered retroactively without rewriting all subsequent blocks, which is computationally infeasible.

Smart contract. A self-executing program stored on a blockchain. Runs automatically when specific conditions are met. No human needs to approve the execution. In gaming, smart contracts handle token rewards, NFT minting, marketplace trades, and staking payouts automatically.

Gas. A fee paid to blockchain validators for processing transactions. On Ethereum mainnet, gas fees can be significant. Gaming chains like Ronin and Immutable X operate with near-zero gas for users. Gas fees exist on every blockchain but vary enormously by chain and network congestion.

Layer 1 (L1). The base blockchain. Ethereum is a Layer 1. Solana is a Layer 1. Layer 1 blockchains have their own consensus mechanisms and security. They tend to be slower and more expensive than Layer 2 solutions but are the ultimate security anchors for the assets built on top of them.

Layer 2 (L2). A scaling solution built on top of a Layer 1 blockchain. Immutable X is a Layer 2 on Ethereum. Polygon is a Layer 2 on Ethereum. Layer 2 solutions process transactions faster and cheaper by batching activity off-chain and posting proofs to the Layer 1 for security.

Proof of Stake (PoS). A consensus mechanism where validators stake cryptocurrency as collateral to earn the right to validate transactions. Ethereum moved to proof of stake in 2022, reducing energy consumption by approximately 99.95%. Most gaming blockchains use proof of stake or variants of it.

On-chain. Anything recorded directly on a blockchain. On-chain transactions, NFT records, and token balances are permanent and publicly verifiable. Off-chain refers to data stored elsewhere that is not on the blockchain itself.

Wallet and Security Terms

Crypto wallet. Software that stores private keys and manages blockchain assets. It does not actually hold assets. Assets live on the blockchain. The wallet holds the private keys that prove you own those assets and let you sign transactions. MetaMask, Phantom, and Ronin Wallet are examples.

Seed phrase. A 12 or 24 word recovery phrase generated when you create a wallet. This phrase is the master key to your wallet. Anyone who has it controls your wallet permanently. Write it on paper and store it offline. Never share it with anyone for any reason.

Private key. A long alphanumeric string derived from your seed phrase that authorizes transactions from your wallet. Your seed phrase generates your private key. Losing either means losing access to your assets. Never share your private key.

Public key / Wallet address. A shortened, shareable version of your public key. This is what you share when receiving tokens or NFTs. It is safe to share publicly. It lets others send assets to you but gives no ability to spend or transfer your assets.

Non-custodial wallet. A wallet where only you hold the private keys. No company can access your funds. Full ownership and full responsibility. MetaMask and Phantom are non-custodial. Coinbase’s exchange wallet is custodial because Coinbase holds the keys.

Hardware wallet. A physical device that stores private keys offline. Even if your computer is completely compromised with malware, a hardware wallet requires physical button confirmation to sign transactions. Ledger and Trezor are the leading hardware wallets. Essential for large holdings.

Seed phrase phishing. The most common method of crypto theft. An attacker pretends to be game support, a wallet company, or a helpful community member and tricks you into revealing your seed phrase. Legitimate companies and game studios never ask for your seed phrase. Ever.

Token and Asset Terms

NFT (Non-Fungible Token). A unique token on a blockchain representing ownership of a specific digital asset. Each NFT has a unique identifier that distinguishes it from all others. In gaming, NFTs represent characters, cards, weapons, land, and any other item that requires verifiable unique ownership.

Fungible token. A token that is interchangeable with identical tokens of the same type. One AXS token is worth the same as any other AXS token. Fungible tokens are currencies. NFTs are unique assets.

ERC-721. The Ethereum token standard for NFTs. Defines the technical rules that all NFTs on Ethereum and compatible chains must follow. Most game NFTs use ERC-721 or a variant. ERC-721C is a newer version that adds enforceable creator royalties on secondary sales.

ERC-20. The Ethereum token standard for fungible tokens. Most cryptocurrency tokens, including game utility tokens, follow ERC-20. An ERC-20 token has a total supply, can be divided into fractional amounts, and is interchangeable with identical tokens.

Token minting. The creation of a new token. In gaming, minting happens when a new NFT character is created, when a card pack is opened and cards are assigned to a wallet, or when breeding two NFTs creates a new offspring NFT. Minting is recorded permanently on the blockchain.

Token burn. Permanently removing tokens from circulation by sending them to an address from which they can never be retrieved. Token burns reduce total supply, which can support token price if demand stays constant. Many games burn utility tokens through in-game spending mechanics.

Metadata. The data describing what an NFT actually represents. A character NFT’s metadata might include its name, stats, visual traits, and abilities. Metadata is typically stored off-chain and pointed to by the on-chain token. Whether that metadata is on decentralized storage or centralized servers affects how permanent and unchangeable it is.

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System). A decentralized storage network commonly used to store NFT metadata and artwork. Files stored on IPFS persist as long as at least one node in the network keeps a copy. More resilient than centralized servers for NFT metadata storage.

GameFi and Economy Terms

GameFi. The combination of gaming and decentralized finance. Blockchain games that incorporate earning mechanics, staking, yield farming, and governance token voting. The broader category that includes play-to-earn as a subset.

Play-to-earn (P2E). A gaming model where players earn real cryptocurrency tokens or NFTs through in-game activities. Completing quests, winning battles, crafting, and reaching milestones all generate token rewards that can be traded on exchanges.

Dual token model. A tokenomics design using two separate tokens: a governance token with limited supply for long-term ownership and voting, and a utility token earned freely through gameplay for in-game transactions. Separates governance value from inflationary gameplay rewards.

Governance token. A token giving holders voting rights over a game’s or protocol’s decisions. Common votes include token emission rate changes, new feature priorities, treasury allocations, and significant balance updates. Examples: AXS for Axie Infinity, GODS for Gods Unchained.

Utility token. A token earned through gameplay and spent on in-game actions. The everyday currency of a game’s economy. Examples: SLP in Axie Infinity, QUEST in RavenQuest. Utility tokens typically have higher supply and more price volatility than governance tokens.

Token sinks. Mechanisms that remove tokens from circulation by requiring players to spend them on in-game actions. Breeding fees, crafting costs, upgrade payments, and tournament entry fees are all token sinks. Strong sinks are essential for utility token price stability.

Token emission. The rate at which new tokens enter circulation as player rewards. If emission outpaces sink absorption, inflation drives token prices down. Checking emission schedules before engaging with a game’s economy is one of the most important research steps.

Tokenomics. The economic design of a token system. Covers total supply, initial distribution, vesting schedules, emission rate, sink mechanisms, and governance structure. The quality of a game’s tokenomics is the primary determinant of whether its economy is sustainable long-term.

Vesting schedule. A predetermined timeline over which tokens allocated to team members, investors, or community programs become available to sell or transfer. Short vesting periods create immediate selling pressure. Responsible projects have vesting schedules spanning years with initial lock-up periods called cliff periods.

Trading and Market Terms

DEX (Decentralized Exchange). A trading platform where users swap tokens directly through smart contracts, without a central company acting as intermediary. Uniswap, Sushiswap, and game-specific DEXes like Katana on Ronin are examples. Game tokens are typically traded on DEXes.

CEX (Centralized Exchange). A traditional cryptocurrency exchange where the company holds custody of assets during trading. Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance are CEXes. More user-friendly for beginners. Where most players go to buy crypto for gaming or cash out earnings.

Liquidity pool. A pool of tokens deposited by users into a smart contract, enabling decentralized trading. When you buy a game token on a DEX, you buy from a liquidity pool. Pool depth determines price stability. Thin pools experience large price swings on modest trades.

Slippage. The difference between the expected price of a trade and the actual price when the transaction executes. High slippage occurs in thin liquidity pools where large trades move the price significantly. Set a slippage tolerance in your DEX settings to avoid unexpected prices on large trades.

Floor price. The lowest listed price for any NFT in a particular collection. Floor price is used to gauge the minimum market value of a collection. If floor price trends down over weeks, the collection is losing market interest. Rising floor prices signal growing demand.

Market cap. Total token supply multiplied by current token price. Gives a rough sense of a project’s total value. In gaming, market cap can be misleading because a large portion of total supply may be locked in vesting. Circulating market cap, using only the currently tradeable supply, is more meaningful.

Stablecoin. A cryptocurrency pegged to a stable asset, typically the US dollar. USDC and USDT are the most common. Converting earned game tokens to stablecoins protects the dollar value of your earnings from cryptocurrency price volatility. Many experienced players cash out portions of earnings to stablecoins regularly.

Governance and Community Terms

DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). An organization governed by token holders through voting rather than centralized management. Many blockchain games are governed by DAOs where players holding governance tokens vote on economic parameters, development priorities, and treasury spending.

Proposal. A formal suggestion submitted to a DAO for community voting. Any governance token holder above a threshold can typically submit proposals. Proposals that pass by majority vote become binding changes to the game’s parameters or development direction.

Treasury. The pool of tokens held by a DAO or project for ongoing development and operations. Treasury health indicates how long a project can continue operating without additional funding. A large, diversified treasury is a positive sign. A depleted treasury is a warning sign.

Gaming guild. An organization that pools NFT gaming assets and lends them to players through scholarship programs. Guilds share earnings between the asset owner and the playing scholar. Yield Guild Games and Merit Circle are the most well-known gaming guilds.

Scholar. A player who borrows NFT gaming assets from a guild through a scholarship program. The scholar plays using the guild’s assets and shares a percentage of earned tokens with the guild. Common in games with meaningful entry costs that would otherwise exclude less affluent players.

Gaming-Specific Terms

Gas-free transactions. Blockchain transactions where the gas fee is subsidized or handled differently so the user pays zero fee. Immutable X processes NFT trades gas-free for users. Ronin Network charges minimal fees. Gas-free transactions are essential for gaming because games require many small transactions per session.

Breeding. Creating a new NFT character or creature by combining two parent NFTs. Axie Infinity’s breeding mechanic is the most recognized example. Parent NFTs typically record a breeding count, and breeding fees often involve burning utility tokens, serving as a significant token sink.

Yield farming. A DeFi strategy where you provide liquidity to a trading pool by depositing token pairs and earn fees from trading activity in that pool. Some GameFi projects allow players to yield farm with game tokens, generating passive income from the game’s trading volume.

Staking. Locking tokens or NFTs in a smart contract for a period to earn additional token rewards. A core DeFi mechanic applied to gaming assets. Staking governance tokens often earns protocol fee distributions. Staking character NFTs may earn utility token yield.

Airdrop. Free token distribution to qualifying wallet addresses. Projects use airdrops to reward early supporters, build community, or distribute governance tokens to active users. Receiving an airdrop requires no purchase. Airdrop recipients should be aware that received tokens may be taxable income in many jurisdictions.

Whitelist / Allowlist. A pre-approved list of wallet addresses that can participate in a token sale, NFT mint, or early access event before the general public. Being on a whitelist is generally required to participate in popular launches at the lowest prices. Whitelists are usually earned through community participation, early adoption, or social media promotion.

Mint. The creation of a new NFT on the blockchain. When a player breeds two Axies, the offspring is minted. When a player opens a Gods Unchained card pack, the cards inside are minted. Minting requires a transaction on the blockchain and may incur gas fees depending on the chain.

Risk and Security Terms

Rug pull. A fraud where a project team raises funds or inflates token prices and then disappears with the money. Common warning signs include anonymous teams, no audited contracts, unrealistic return promises, and no working game. The most damaging form of fraud in the blockchain gaming space.

Smart contract exploit. A vulnerability in a smart contract’s code that allows an attacker to drain funds or manipulate outcomes in ways the developer did not intend. Always verify that any game you invest in has had its smart contracts audited by a reputable security firm.

Bridge. A mechanism allowing tokens or NFTs to move between different blockchains. The Ronin bridge connects Ethereum to the Ronin Network. Bridge exploits have historically been one of the highest-value attack vectors in crypto, including the $625 million Ronin bridge hack in 2022.

Approval transaction. A transaction authorizing a smart contract to spend or transfer your tokens or NFTs. Granting unlimited approvals is a security risk. Always check approval amounts and only grant what is necessary for the specific action you are taking. Use revoke.cash or equivalent tools to remove old approvals regularly.

DYOR (Do Your Own Research). A community phrase emphasizing that no advice substitutes for personal research. Before investing time or money in any blockchain game, research the team, read the tokenomics, check the smart contract audit status, verify on-chain wallet trends, and form your own informed view rather than relying solely on community enthusiasm or promotional content.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important term to understand in crypto gaming?

Tokenomics covers the economic design governing all token systems in gaming and determines whether a game’s economy is sustainable. Understanding token supply, emission rates, and sink mechanisms before committing to any game is the single most valuable knowledge investment you can make in crypto gaming.

What is the difference between a token and a coin in gaming?

In practice the terms are used interchangeably in gaming contexts. Technically, a coin refers to the native currency of a blockchain like ETH for Ethereum or SOL for Solana. A token is built on an existing blockchain using a token standard like ERC-20. Most game currencies are tokens built on existing blockchains rather than native blockchain currencies.

What does GM and GG mean in crypto gaming?

GM means Good Morning and is used as a friendly greeting in Web3 communities regardless of the actual time of day. GG means Good Game and is borrowed from traditional gaming. WAGMI means We Are All Going to Make It, an expression of optimism about crypto investments. NGMI means Not Going to Make It, typically used to describe poor investment decisions.

What is a floor price in NFT gaming?

The floor price is the lowest listed price for any NFT in a specific collection on the open marketplace. It represents the minimum cost to acquire any item in that collection at current market conditions. Floor price trends are a useful signal of collection health: rising floors indicate growing demand, falling floors indicate declining interest.

Understanding these terms puts you in control of your crypto gaming experience rather than at the mercy of others’ descriptions of it. The space moves fast and new terms emerge constantly, but the fundamentals in this glossary apply across virtually every blockchain gaming project you will encounter in 2026 and beyond.
