In Brief:

  • Circle and Kakao Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore blockchain-based payment infrastructure in South Korea.
  • The agreement targets stablecoin payments, cross-border remittances, and connections between banking systems and blockchain networks.
  • This initiative links the extensive Kakao ecosystem with Circle’s payment technology, enhancing the potential for web3 gaming.

Circle and Kakao explore blockchain integration

Circle has entered a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Kakao Group, aiming to assess blockchain payment infrastructure and digital asset technologies. Announced on July 23, the deal focuses on integrating Circle’s stablecoin capabilities across Kakao’s extensive consumer platforms.

The MOU encompasses Kakao’s main entities: Kakao, its payments service Kakao Pay, and Kakao Bank. This collaboration takes advantage of KakaoTalk’s vast penetration in South Korea, reaching approximately 93 percent of the population. The connection means Circle’s technology could gain immediate access to a large consumer base.

Scope of the partnership

The companies plan to explore how Circle’s infrastructure can connect with Kakao’s services, focusing on stablecoin payments and cross-border remittances. A notable aspect is the emphasis on won-backed stablecoins, with Kakao planning to assess KRW-pegged tokens alongside USDC. Kakao Pay CEO Shin Won-keun said that the collaboration is poised to help establish a Korean digital asset ecosystem in partnership with Circle.

Both parties regard the agreement as exploratory, and no specific timeline for commercial services has been provided. Ongoing technical and regulatory assessments will include compliance, risk management, and security protocols prior to any potential launch.

Circle’s broader strategy in South Korea

The Kakao collaboration comes as part of Circle’s expanded efforts in South Korea, which also includes an MOU with Viva Republica, the operator of Toss and Toss Bank. Under this agreement, Toss will examine biometric payment tools and USDC-linked financial products. In contrast, Toss Bank will focus on connecting stablecoin infrastructure with conventional banking systems.

Circle’s strategy aims to counter Korea’s risk of lagging in digital asset adoption. Chief Strategy Officer Dante Disparte expressed concerns about the urgency of innovation in the region, emphasizing the importance of integrating new technologies with existing payment networks.

Kakao’s gaming influence

Kakao’s involvement is significant, given the company’s presence in the gaming sector through Kakao Games. Known for publishing major titles like PUBG and the games from Lion Heart Studio, Kakao is also pushing into web3 through METABORA. This subsidiary is focused on blockchain gaming and operates the BORA platform, which supports token economies and content within their ecosystem.

The gaming arm’s initiatives include forming strategic partnerships, such as a recent MOU with the NEAR Foundation to develop web3 games and enhance cross-chain liquidity. Integrating Circle’s stablecoin payment mechanisms into Kakao’s gaming ecosystem could streamline transactions in GameFi, lowering barriers for casual players to enter onchain economies.

Potential for a seamless payment system

While the MOU remains a research initiative, the possibility of linking Kakao’s vast user base with Circle’s stablecoin capabilities points to potential advancements in digital finance and gaming. Should this integration materialize post-regulatory approval, it could transform crypto gaming payment processes and foster wider adoption of digital currencies in South Korea’s consumer landscape.
