Castle Of Blackwater
What is Castle of Blackwater?
Castle of Blackwater is an online social deduction game — the genre of Among Us and Werewolf — set in a gothic castle where up to fifteen players are trapped together and only one faction can win. Ten strangers arrive with a shared mission: complete their tasks and escape with their lives. Some will co-operate and form alliances. Others are lying from the first minute. The game's own tagline is It Pays To Betray, and its pitch is built entirely around that tension: when lives are at stake and nobody's word can be trusted, who do you side with?
How to play Castle of Blackwater
Each round assigns players to one of three factions — Protectors, Satanic and Forgotten — each with its own powers, purpose and win condition. Protectors work to finish the castle's tasks and identify the traitors among them; the Satanic faction works to eliminate them without being caught; the Forgotten pursue objectives of their own. Play is a loop of completing objectives around the castle, watching who was where, and then arguing it out in group discussion where the only real weapons are accusation, alibi and persuasion. Matches are short, chaotic and heavily social, which is why the game is a fixture on Twitch.
What makes Castle of Blackwater different
The three-faction structure is the departure. Most social deduction games split a lobby two ways — innocents and impostors — which makes every conversation a binary hunt. A third faction with its own agenda means a player who is telling the truth about not being Satanic may still be lying about everything else, and alliances form across faction lines. The game launched on Steam in March 2025 and went free-to-play in August 2025, and it is playable in a browser as well as through Steam.

Our verdict on Castle Of Blackwater
Castle Of Blackwater is a dark fantasy dungeon-crawler concept that leans on blockchain asset ownership rather than on-chain gameplay. The pitch is straightforward: work through a castle stocked with monsters, traps and boss encounters, collecting weapons, armour and items that strengthen your character as the difficulty climbs. Those items are tokenised on Ethereum and Polygon, so the equipment you accumulate can in principle be traded outside the game rather than locked to an account.
What works, at least on paper, is the fit between genre and premise. Loot-driven progression is one of the few designs where tradable items make obvious sense — a rare drop has value because the encounter that produced it was hard. The dual-chain choice also suggests an awareness that mainnet fees make frequent low-value item transfers impractical.
What does not work is how little is verifiable. The public material is promotional rather than descriptive: no named developer, no detail on combat systems, run structure or how items enter circulation, and no evidence of how the economy is balanced against inflation from constant drops. Its categorisation across collectibles and mini-games sits awkwardly with the dungeon-crawler framing.
It suits players who want NFT-backed loot and are comfortable evaluating an early, thinly documented project on its own site before committing anything.
