What is Persona?

Persona is an avatar collection built by Unagi Gaming Studio and intended as the identity layer for that studio's wider gaming ecosystem, rather than as a standalone game. The art is deliberately retro anime, drawn to feel nostalgic rather than to chase the prevailing profile-picture style, and the collection runs to 8,875 unique characters minted on Ethereum in February 2024 under the ticker PRSN. It was founded by Spike, a well-known figure in the Bored Ape community, and the studio behind it has backing from Binance Labs. The intent stated from the start was that these avatars would carry across whatever Unagi shipped, so that owning one meant something in several games rather than in a single title.

How to play Persona

Persona itself is held rather than played — the games are Unagi's, and the avatar is your credential inside them. In practice a holder does three things. First, staking: avatars can be staked, on Ethereum mainnet or on Base, to earn rewards for holding rather than selling. Second, access: Unagi has attached holder benefits to the collection, including reduced trading fees and priority entry into competitions, so the avatar functions as a season pass across the ecosystem. Third, community participation, including campaigns that reward holders for creating Persona content. Anyone arriving expecting a downloadable Persona game should look instead at Unagi's game releases, which are what the avatars plug into.

Persona tokenomics & earning

There is no Persona token; the NFT is the asset. Value concentrates in the avatar itself, with a collection of 8,875 items held across roughly fifteen hundred owners and a total market capitalisation in the low millions of dollars, which makes it a genuinely small collection where individual sales move the floor. Earning comes from staking rewards and from the resale value of an avatar, not from an emission schedule, and the holder perks are worth exactly as much as the ecosystem's games are worth playing.
