Six weeks before Week 1, I watched a pregame animation and felt something this series hasn’t given me in a while. Players’ faces. The crowd noise. The coaching staff milling around the sideline. All of it landed.

I’ve put a few hours into this year’s Madden, which isn’t enough for a verdict. But some improvements hit immediately, and others are going to take longer to unpack before I know what I think. What I can say now is that Madden 27 has already made a better impression on me than last year’s game, and that gives me some confidence EA Sports may be on to something.

The catch button is doing something new

Ad image Ad image

The reworked passing game is the change you feel first, and it comes down to a new Timing-Based Catch mechanic. Throw to a receiver, hold the catch button, and a meter appears over his head. Release inside the green zone and your receiver wins position on the defender, which usually means a completion. Hold too long or let go too early and you’re looking at a drop, or a deflection into a defender’s hands.

It’s an ingenious system, and what makes it work is that it treats the quarterback and receiver as partners on every pass play. I could already aim throws and modulate their strength. Now I can hand my receiver a shot at a big play through clear, direct inputs, and the catch feels like something I made happen. When that meter goes green and the ball sticks, it’s a genuine rush.

It also takes a while to stop embarrassing yourself

The timing is precise. Bullet passes are rough to convert this way because the ball arrives fast and the window for holding the button shrinks accordingly.

And in modes like Quick Play, where I’m running the quarterback throwing the ball and then the receiver catching it, the whole thing starts feeling like inputting fighting game combos. All those presses. All those directions.

Skills Trainer is the reason this doesn’t become a problem. It gathers every one of Madden 27’s changes into a single tutorial mode and lets me repeat them until they stick, which is where I’d go to sort out the timing on throws and catches. Same place to learn the new tackling system, which adds Conservative and Dive tackles, and the new pass rush moves built to beat the offensive line and get into the quarterback’s face.

Your linebacker wants to talk about his contract

The marquee change is the Persona Engine, a rethink of Franchise mode that gives every player on your roster motivations, goals and desires. Pay your stars well and they’re happy. Neglect them and words like “trade” and “holdout” start entering the conversation.

My franchise hasn’t gone deep enough to see the engine really working yet, but I can see what’s coming. Zack Baun, a starting linebacker for my beloved Philadelphia Eagles, is already bringing up a new contract. I’m not looking forward to that negotiation.

MUT is still MUT

Madden Ultimate Team is back, as it was always going to be, being one of Madden’s most popular modes. My Philadelphia Cream Cheeses are coming together nicely, with young studs like Cooper DeJean, locker room leaders like Calais Campbell and legends like Kam Chancellor near the top of my roster.

The experience still boils down to one loop, though. Open packs, complete challenge, accrue packs, open packs, complete challenges, accrue packs, on and on. I can take the team online against other MUTers, but strip away the roster I’ve built and it’s core Madden 27 gameplay again. “Don’t fix what isn’t broken” applies here, and plenty of people love this mode. After this many years of the same thing, I find it lacking. Maybe more hours will change my mind.

Where I’m at heading into the full review

I’ve done a little of everything at this point, and the on-field gameplay is the strength it usually is. The new passing game is a tough nut to crack, but once I cracked it, I felt powerful under center. The Persona Engine is already making itself known in Franchise.

So far so good, Madden. My full review lands early next week, and I’ll know by then whether Zack Baun is still an Eagle.
