About Virtual Basketball Association
What was Virtual Basketball Association?
Virtual Basketball Association (VBA) was a basketball management game on Solana made by Fast Break Labs, a studio founded by former Meta staff Charles Du and John Wu. The players were NFTs. As a General Manager you built a five-player team from them and entered weekly round-robin tournaments, which played out as live play-by-play simulations. Winning teams earned SOL and climbed the rankings.
Funding and launch
In March 2022 Fast Break Labs raised a $6 million seed round led by Pantera Capital and Patron, with Riot Games, Niantic and Solana Ventures among the backers. The alpha opened the same month with a first draft of 2,000 players.
Status: shut down
VBA announced its shutdown on 30 January 2023 in a post titled “Our Final Chapter”. The game is no longer playable, and its old domain is now parked. Its player and pack NFTs may still show up on secondary marketplaces, but they no longer do anything in a game.
Our verdict
Virtual Basketball Association was a well-funded attempt at an NFT fantasy basketball league on Solana. It closed in January 2023, about a year after its alpha. We keep this page as a record. There is nothing left to play.
