Call of Duty‘s matchmaking argument has numbers attached to it now, and they don’t flatter the system fans keep asking for.

Modern Warfare 4’s beta arrives this coming weekend, and the Call of Duty team confirmed in a new thread that it’ll run two matchmaking systems at once: the new one introduced in Black Ops 7 Season 5, and the open matchmaking that launched alongside Black Ops 7 last year.

That’s not a compromise. That’s a data collection run.

Why anyone cares this much about an algorithm

Matchmaking decides whether you have a good night. Are you getting steamrolled? Are you the one doing the steamrolling? An algorithm makes that call before you ever load into the map, which is why this stays one of the hottest topics in the Call of Duty community.

Open matchmaking was the studio‘s answer to years of complaints about aggressive skill-based matchmaking, which plenty of players felt punished them for playing well. Open is more random, and that randomness makes lobbies more varied and more dynamic.

The newer system takes its inspiration from the matchmaking in the original two Black Ops games. It has also raised a lot of questions.

The vague explanation that satisfied nobody

Back in July, Call of Duty said the new system builds on what the studio has “learned, with smarter team balancing, wide match variety, improvements that help keep matches full, and a better experience for mixed-level parties.”

Fans were confused about what that actually described. Once they played it, many landed on a simpler verdict: they liked open matchmaking more.

And here’s where it gets awkward for that verdict.

The stats the team pulled out

The Call of Duty team says players are quitting fewer matches since the new strategy went in. Under last fall’s open matchmaking, players quit more, got fewer kills and told surveys they were having less fun.

The team’s own breakdown: “We know some players like Open, but the issues were clear. For 80% of players in BO7 from launch to Season 04, Open vs. Standard saw: • 32.7% higher quit rates • 14.4% fewer kills per minute • 5.3% lower win rates • 59.2% more ‘Not Fun’ ratings On Nuketown 24/7, quit rates…”

Under the summer system, some of the game’s top players are facing tougher competition. They’re also quitting less.

What this means for October

Running both systems lets Infinity Ward keep chewing on the data before locking anything down for the full game. There’s been no firm commitment on which matchmaking ships in October.

The beta numbers may not match what came before, either. MW4’s beta could pull more players than Black Ops 7 has seen in recent months. Modern Warfare is the more popular Call of Duty subfranchise, and a fresh entry tends to draw newcomers, especially in a stretch when not much else is releasing.

Matchmaking isn’t the only thing on the beta docket. It’s also bringing quality of life improvements players have been asking for, the kind that address problems the series has carried for the better part of a decade.

If you’ve got a side in this fight, the weekend is when your input counts as evidence.
