Steam’s New 9/10 Hit Just Pulled 268,101 Players And Costs Under $5

Four people stranded on an island, armed with guns, trying to catch fish. That’s the whole pitch. It’s also currently outperforming most of what AAA publishers shipped this year.

How to Fish hit an all-time peak of 268,101 concurrent players shortly after launch. For scale: Sony’s expensive flop Marathon topped out at 88,000, and Forza Horizon 6, which actually worked, managed 302,000. A game about shooting fish got within spitting distance of a Forza launch.

The friendslop formula, refined

Steam has a type. Peak, Lethal Company, Meccha Chameleon: small teams, thin marketing budgets, premises you could explain in one breath. All of them broke out anyway. The community settled on “friendslop” as the affectionate label, and it stuck because it’s accurate.

The recipe by now is close to a formula. Make it unserious. Make it physics-based if you can. Cap it at four players. Give them a simple goal and absurd means of achieving it. Keep it cheap, keep it running on any PC, and let the crude visuals do half the comedic work.

How to Fish follows that blueprint almost to the letter, and it’s paying off.

Guns, fish and a gambling problem

Dazed Games built it, with support and funding from Landfall Games, the studio behind Peak and Content Warning. Up to four players wash up on an island and have to fish to survive. The tools available for that job include an assortment of firearms.

Better gear costs money. You earn it by collecting and killing fish, which tracks. Or by gambling, which doesn’t, and is funnier for it.

The reviews back up the numbers

Player counts don’t prove a game is good. Plenty of duds have spiked on day one and emptied out by the weekend. But How to Fish has already pulled over 6,000 reviews, and 94% of them are positive. That’s not a launch-week sugar high.

Then there’s the price, which is probably doing more heavy lifting than anything else. It normally runs $7.99. Right now there’s an introductory offer knocking 38% off, which brings it to $4.95.

Five dollars for something you and three friends can pick up cold on a weeknight. Expect the goofy updates to keep arriving for the next couple of years, because that’s what these games do.
