The 6000 MT/s memory you paid extra for is probably running at 4800 MT/s right now. Your graphics card is handing data to the processor in small scraps instead of one clean pass. And your fans are spinning faster than they need to, for no reason at all.

None of that is a hardware fault. It’s how most motherboards ship, locked to conservative defaults so they boot with almost anything you plug in. Compatibility first, performance later, if you ever get around to it.

Most people don’t. They install Windows, open a browser and never touch the one screen that decides how the machine behaves before Windows even loads.

A warning before we go further. This is for people making their first build or their first trip into BIOS, not overclockers chasing the last megahertz. And because every motherboard lays out its menus differently, treat what follows as a map of what to change, not a click-by-click walkthrough. If an option means nothing to you, leave it alone.

Turn on the memory speed you already paid for

This is the single most useful change you can make after first boot, and it takes about 10 seconds.

DDR4 and DDR5 kits are sold at rated speeds, but BIOS runs them slower out of caution. So a kit advertised as 6000 MT/s often idles at 4800 MT/s until you say otherwise.

Flip on XMP on Intel boards, or EXPO on AMD, and the motherboard loads the memory maker’s own numbers: frequency, timings and voltage in one profile.

In anything that leans on RAM speed, and plenty of games do, that gap shows up. No overclocking required. You’re just unlocking what’s printed on the box.

The graphics setting hiding one letter deep in the menu

Resizable BAR, called Smart Access Memory (SAM) on AMD, lets the processor see the whole of the graphics card’s memory at once instead of shuffling it across in small chunks.

In practice that helps in a fair number of modern games, especially when you pair a recent GPU with a current processor. The gain isn’t the same everywhere. But in some titles it reaches double-digit percentages in FPS.

On most current boards it’s a single toggle, as long as the rest of your system supports it.

A powerful PC doesn’t have to sound like one

Loud and fast are not the same thing. Most boards let you decide how fan speed climbs against processor or system temperature.

Set a sensible curve and the fans stay near silent during ordinary use, then ramp only when there’s real heat to move. You get a quieter machine without giving up cooling. Spend hours at the desk every day and you’ll notice the difference, both idle and mid-load in something demanding.

Here’s the part worth knowing. Even if you don’t want to hand-build a fan curve, which can look fiddly and slow, many boards include a ready-made “Quiet” profile. Pick it and the PC gets a lot calmer, usually with next to no performance cost, because the default profile runs fans at more RPM than they need.

Free performance, with a catch

Modern processors raise their own clocks when temperature and power headroom allow. On AMD that’s Precision Boost Overdrive. On Intel it’s Multicore Enhancement (MCE), which lets the chip hold higher speeds when the cooling can take it.

Both hand you extra performance without traditional overclocking. The catch: they usually pull more power and run hotter.

If you’d rather stay cool and quiet, pick a more conservative profile or a power-saving mode instead. It’s a trade, and which way you lean depends on how you want the machine to behave.

The one that isn’t a setting at all

This is a habit, not a toggle, and it might matter most.

Motherboard makers push new BIOS versions often. They improve RAM compatibility, fix stability bugs, tighten security and sometimes squeeze better processor performance out of the same silicon.

If your PC runs fine, you don’t need to chase every release. But if you just bought a new board, or you’re fighting stability problems, check whether a newer BIOS exists for your model.

The process is far simpler than it used to be. Follow the maker’s instructions to the letter anyway, so an update doesn’t turn into a problem of its own.

A few changes, real payoff

BIOS looks intimidating if you’ve never opened it. You don’t need to touch dozens of options to feel a difference.

XMP or EXPO. Resizable BAR. A proper fan setup. The right processor power settings. A current BIOS. That short list covers most of what helps.

Move carefully. If you’re unsure about an option, check the motherboard manual, the maker or a trustworthy tutorial before you change it. That’s how you get everything the machine can give without putting its stability at risk.
