Apple has resisted putting a touchscreen on a Mac for years. That resistance may end in Los Angeles this month.
The company has started sending invitations to select journalists for a special product event on October 28, 2026, in Los Angeles. The device getting the most attention is one people have argued about for a long time: the first MacBook with a touchscreen.
The headline act is expected to be 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens. That’s a historic shift for the line.
Until now, Apple has kept touch off its laptops and held a hard line between the MacBook and the iPad. If Gurman is right, that line gets a lot blurrier.
The new models are rumored to be noticeably thinner and lighter, with OLED panels and even a Dynamic Island like the one on the iPhone. Earlier reports floated a possible MacBook Ultra name. Gurman now thinks it’s more likely the devices will stay in the MacBook Pro family.
Not every new Mac is getting the redesign
Apple is also expected to show a more conventional 14-inch MacBook Pro with the new M6 chip, plus a refreshed iMac that also runs on M6.
Those are separate machines from the larger OLED MacBooks. Earlier leaks suggest the OLED models may use different versions of the chip, so don’t assume every M6 Mac will perform the same.
The iPad mini fixes its most annoying flaw
The iPad mini is in line for a meaningful upgrade too. It’s expected to finally get an OLED display.
Reports also point to the front camera moving to a spot that works better for video calls in landscape orientation. Anyone who has held an iPad mini sideways on a call and stared off to the side of the screen will appreciate that one. A redesigned speaker system is also reportedly on the way, and earlier leaks have tied the tablet to the A20 Pro chip.
October 28 may not be the announcement date
One caveat matters here. October 28 is confirmed as the date of the journalist hands-on invitations, not necessarily the day Apple officially announces anything.
Gurman previously said the new products would be unveiled on or around October 27, possibly through an online presentation. So if you’re waiting on a touchscreen MacBook Pro, watch for news a day early.
