Four heroes storm a floating fortress, cut down four villains and watch the whole thing start to fall out of the sky. Two of them get out. Two of them don’t.

That’s how Lufia and the Fortress of Doom opened in 1993, and it’s still one of the better first acts the Super Nintendo ever gave you. Now the series is coming back. Developer Taito has partnered with Sweden-based publisher Clear River Games on a new port, Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga, due on Windows PC and consoles sometime in 2027.

If you missed these games the first time, you’re not alone. The early 1990s are widely hailed as a golden age for RPGs, the stretch that produced Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Earthbound and Secret of Mana. Plenty of gems from that era are awfully hard to find today, and Lufia has spent decades as one of them. Lesser known, sure. But beloved by the people who played it.

Here’s the honest pitch. Lufia 2 is widely held to be the more interesting and impactful game of the pair, and it isn’t close.

The first game is a straight-up, turn-based RPG in the Dragon Quest mold. Lufia 2 keeps the battles and then fills its dungeons with intricate puzzles built around grappling hooks, bombs and arrows. That’s the Zelda part of the equation, and it’s what makes the dungeon crawls stick in your head long after the credits.

Then there’s the Pokémon part. Lufia 2 has a light “capsule monster” mechanic that lets you bring along randomized elemental creatures as a fifth party member. You feed them items and equipment to shape their skills, which turns a side system into something you’ll fuss over for hours.

A 99-floor dungeon that never repeats

And if that weren’t enough, the sequel smells a little like a roguelike. The optional Ancient Cave runs 99 procedurally generated floors, and the layout changes every time you go in.

The catch is brutal in the best way. Inside the cave, your party starts with zero experience and bare-bones equipment and items. Everything you built on the outside stays on the outside.

Why you should still start with the first game

Think of Lufia 1 the way you’d think of the first game in Konami’s recent Suikoden 1+2 remaster: an amuse bouche before the main course. It’s worth your time, but it’s the setup.

After that fortress collapses, with Maxim and Selan trapped inside while Artea and Guy escape, peace holds for nearly 100 years. The story picks back up with one of Maxim’s descendants and his childhood friend, Lufia, who set out to save the world from the Sinistrals all over again. (Yes, they’re called the Sinistrals because they’re sinister. The 16-bit era was not subtle.) Sealing away ancient evil rarely holds up in these games, and it doesn’t here either.

The best trick the team pulled came next. They realized the frame story about Maxim, Selan, Artea and Guy was far more interesting than Lufia 1’s main plot, so Lufia 2 is a prequel that lets you play as those four heroes.

Where and when you can play it

Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga launches digitally in 2027 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. Clear River Games also plans physical copies for consoles.

So you’ll get another shot at that opening scene: four heroes, one floating fortress and two of them never making it out.
