Wemade undergoes major ownership change
Wemade is set to transition its leadership as founder Park Kwan-ho sells his 39.33% stake in the company to NeoPulse, a subsidiary of Shengsong Investment, in a deal valued at around 920 billion won, or $590 million. The agreement will elevate NeoPulse to a 40.25% ownership stake once finalized on October 30.
The acquisition is priced at three times Wemade’s current stock price, illustrating the premium offered by NeoPulse. Central to the purchase is Wemade’s status as a developer of significant MMORPGs, particularly The Legend of Mir, which has considerable historical value in China.
Strategic expansion, not just investment
This transaction is described as strategic in nature rather than a mere financial investment. Both parties highlight a shared vision for expanding Wemade into larger global markets, particularly China, while transitioning the company towards an AI-driven development approach.
In a message to employees, Park emphasized the necessity for global expansion, stating, “The games industry could no longer be contained within a single national market.” He indicated that Wemade’s future can no longer be envisioned solely within Korea.
NeoPulse’s ambitions
NeoPulse, which has connections with Alibaba and prominent Chinese gaming firms, plans to support the development of new titles for global markets. The acquisition could leverage Mir‘s existing IP, which faces complex rights and licensing issues in China. A locally connected controlling shareholder may be better positioned to enhance value through strategic partnerships and distribution channels.
The role of AI in future developments
AI is positioned as a critical component in the partnership’s vision for Wemade. The companies aim to integrate AI across game development and services, aiming to meet rising market expectations for quality and user experience. Park noted that “AI is changing both how games are made and how they are enjoyed,” underscoring the urgency for Wemade to be at the forefront of this shift.
While Wemade remains focused on its WEMIX blockchain platform, which features in titles like Night Crows and Mir 4, there was no discussion about the blockchain’s role in the new ownership structure.
