The number that matters in X’s new creator payout scheme isn’t a dollar figure. It’s 500,000.
That’s how many Home Timeline impressions from verified users you need over the last 90 days to even qualify for Original Content Rewards, the program X is launching September 8th to replace its revenue-sharing model. You also need at least 500 verified followers, and there are other requirements on top of that.
If you were making beer money off replies and repackaged clips, that door is closing.
What actually counts as an impression now
Payouts key off “qualified impressions” on “original content.” X defines a qualified impression narrowly: a unique impression from a Premium subscriber, on the Home Timeline feed, where at least 50% of the post is visible.
Read that again. Not any impression. Not any viewer. A Premium subscriber, in one specific feed, with half your post on screen.
That’s a much smaller pool than raw view counts, and it’s the part of this announcement most creators will feel first.
The definition of ‘original’ is the soft spot
X’s guidelines say original reporting or analysis counts. So do videos and photos you shot yourself, plus graphics or illustrations you made, memes included.
Then it gets slippery. Commentary and reactions still qualify, X says, as long as they “add something meaningful.”
Nobody has defined meaningful. That judgment call sits with X, and it’s the same kind of discretion that made the last program contentious.
The stated goal is to stop the gaming
In its announcement post, the company said the point is to move away from loophole exploitation and clickbait. Reposting other people’s work or farming replies shouldn’t pay under the new rules, at least in theory.
Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager, Creators at SpaceXAI, said on X that the program was designed to “reward the creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity, and unique perspectives to 𝕏 — not those who have become best at gaming the system.”
Fair goal. But the previous program was also pitched as a fix, and it’s been revised repeatedly under Elon Musk.
Your last payout date
Anyone currently in the revenue-sharing model keeps earning through September 7th. The next day, the old system is gone.
That leaves a narrow window to check two numbers against your analytics: verified followers and 90-day Home Timeline impressions from verified users. If either one is short of the thresholds, the September 8th switch isn’t a change to your payouts. It’s the end of them.
