Fifty percent one-star reviews. A million players in seven days. Both of those things are true about the same Xbox game right now, and nobody involved seems especially bothered by the first number.
Mistfall Hunter, an extraction action-RPG with a fantasy twist, landed on PC and Xbox Series X/S on July 30 and immediately started dominating Game Pass and the charts. In a genre this crowded, that alone would qualify as a surprise. What makes it stranger is how loudly players have been complaining while they keep showing up.
What you’re actually playing
You’re a Gyldhunter, revived by a mysterious woman named Dew and handed a job: harvest the Gyldenblood and mend the Web of Fate. The world is bleak. You can scavenge and fight alone, or bring friends along.
That’s the pitch from Bellring Games and Skystone Games, and it worked. The game peaked at 44.5k on Steam. The official Mistfall Hunter X account celebrated crossing a million players not long after launch.
Being free to play through Game Pass explains a chunk of that traffic. It doesn’t explain why the crowd stuck around through the reviews.
The complaints are specific, and they’re not small
Region locking is the big one. Players can’t connect with friends or anyone else outside their region, which is a rough limitation for a game built around squading up.
Then there’s the lag. Players say the servers make PvP particularly frustrating.
Some report they can’t even get past the character creation screen. Others are dealing with spambots in chat. Stack all of that together and you’ve got a list of reasons a new player might bounce before the first real run.
Bellring’s answer is a roadmap, not an apology
The developer hasn’t acknowledged any of the complaints yet. What it has done is talk about the future.
Alongside the player milestone announcement, Bellring Games revealed a roadmap covering new seasonal tasks, weapons, monsters and events, plus a tease of a new theme for season two.
That’s a choice. With this many extraction games competing for the same players, it’s notable that the team isn’t prioritizing fixes to keep the crowd that showed up in week one.
A new season is coming. Updates are planned. The one-star reviews keep piling up, and Mistfall Hunter is still the biggest game in the room.
