September 15 is the date to circle. That’s when Aniimo, a free open-world creature-collecting RPG from Pawprint Interactive, arrives on basically every platform you own.
The release date wasn’t announced in a trailer or a showcase. It showed up when pre-orders quietly went live across multiple digital storefronts.
The game itself had already been announced. What was missing was the date, and now it’s here, sitting in the middle of a second half of the year that’s otherwise been swallowed whole by Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19.
Everything else this semester gets measured against that. Aniimo is one of the few titles that earns a look anyway.
It’s chasing Palworld, but it’s not playing the same game
Aniimo wants to take a run at Palworld’s spot as the franchise that keeps poking Pokémon in the ribs. You encounter monsters, capture them, raise them and send them into battle. Standard creature-collector grammar.
The split comes down to structure. Palworld is a survival game, which means resource farming without end. Aniimo isn’t.
Instead you get a structured adventure laid across an open-world map, closer in shape to the Gen 9 Pokémon games than to anything you’d build a base in.
Real-time combat, which puts it in rare company
Aniimo is a real-time action RPG. That single design choice separates it from most of the Pokémon catalog, with Pokémon Legends: Z-A as the exception.
The anime-leaning art style and the creature-collecting hooks are the obvious draws. The size of the open-world map is the part the developers keep pointing at.
Free means free
No PS Plus. No Xbox Game Pass. You can play it on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S without a subscription attached.
It’s also coming to PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, plus mobile on both iOS and Android. That’s a wide net for a game asking nothing at the door.
So what are the pre-orders for? Special editions, stuffed with extra in-game goodies.
What the paid editions actually get you
The Advanced Edition comes with a companion friend accessory, the Battle Pass: Advanced Companion Handbook. Inside that: a Companion Handbook-Exclusive Prismana Aniimo Egg, a Companion Handbook-Exclusive Evolution Material and other rewards.
The Collector’s Edition includes all of the above and adds an exclusive Doll and an exclusive Avatar Frame.
There’s a platform split on the companions, too. The PlayStation version comes with Fluffy. The Xbox version gets Doggo Dude.
Where the Zelda and Animal Crossing DNA shows up
Pokémon is the obvious reference point, but it isn’t the only one. The open-world fantasy framing and the creature-driven quirkiness pull directly from The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing.
You can see it in the shape of the thing: a big map to wander, odd little creatures to collect, no survival meters nagging at you.
Put it on your radar now, because free games have a way of slipping past you when a GTA-sized release is sucking up all the oxygen. September 15, Fluffy or Doggo Dude, your call.
