Two Mandalorian releases land on the same day this September, and neither one requires a trip to the theater.
September 2 is the date to circle. That’s when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on Disney+, and it’s also when LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian drops on the same service. Same day, same subscription, two very different flavors of Din Djarin.
The movie needs a second life, and streaming might give it one
The Mandalorian and Grogu was the first Star Wars movie to hit theaters since 2019. It capped out at just over $340 million worldwide, which isn’t the number Lucasfilm wanted.
But 2026 has been a strange year for that math. Mortal Kombat II and Masters of the Universe both fell short of studio expectations in theaters, then held consistent number one spots on their respective streaming platforms. Supergirl followed the same arc: soft theatrical run, strong streaming afterlife.
Lucasfilm is undoubtedly hoping September 2 does the same thing for Din Djarin.
The LEGO special is the sixth of its kind
Announced at D23 2026 a month before release, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian takes the show’s core characters and runs them through a fun, action-packed new adventure. It’ll be the sixth LEGO Star Wars project made for Disney+.
LEGO has been a big ally of most major franchises over the decades. Star Wars is no different, and pairing the brick treatment with the sub-franchise that carried Disney+ since 2019 is the kind of scheduling that isn’t an accident.
Everything downstream of this show is still growing
Even with a bumpy third season, The Mandalorian is widely regarded as one of the best Star Wars TV shows. It’s been almost single-handedly responsible for where the franchise put its attention on Disney+ for the past seven years, and a fresh slate of upcoming Star Wars movies aiming the property back toward its cinematic roots doesn’t erase that.
Ahsoka season 2 arrives in January 2027, and it wouldn’t exist without this show. Ahsoka came into live-action Star Wars through The Mandalorian season 2, which opened the door for Thrawn, Hera and Ezra to follow. Season 2 is likely to build toward Dave Filoni’s planned Star Wars movie, which would feature characters from The Mandalorian.
Season 4 already exists on paper
Jon Favreau has indicated that The Mandalorian season 4 has been written. He spent his energy on The Mandalorian and Grogu, but a finished script says he’s got more stories queued up for Din Djarin and his apprentice.
With Star Wars Celebration 2027 on the horizon, more projects that either continue from or lean heavily on this show wouldn’t be a surprise. For now, though, clear your September 2. Twice.
