Cobie Smulders showed up for about a minute at the end of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, and Netflix is building an entire spinoff around her.

That’s the move. Her character, Emi Finch, is Mickey Haller’s half-sister. She doesn’t exist in Michael Connelly’s novels. And she’s about to inherit one of the most important jobs in the whole franchise.

To understand why, you have to understand what Netflix couldn’t have.

The Bosch problem

In Connelly’s books, Mickey Haller has a paternal half-brother: Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch. Their relationship threads through both men’s book series. It’s foundational.

On Netflix, it’s been impossible. Prime Video owns the IP for Bosch, so The Lincoln Lawyer has never been able to put him on screen. The show cut him out and worked around the hole.

Two hit shows, two networks, one character neither can share. Bosch has been a tremendous success for Prime Video. The Lincoln Lawyer has been a huge win for Netflix. And the fact that these characters can’t be in a room together has been a sticking point for both.

Season 4’s finale offered the workaround.

Enter Emi Finch

Smulders arrived in a small capacity, but the intent isn’t subtle. Emi is Mickey’s newly discovered half-sibling, and she’s stepping into the slot Bosch would occupy if the rights allowed it.

That matters more than it sounds, because the upcoming season adapts one of the Lincoln Lawyer books that leans heavily on a Bosch storyline. Somebody has to carry that weight. It’s her.

Netflix has now announced a spinoff built directly around Emi. Read that plainly: the platform is spearheading its own version of Bosch, gender-bent.

Not the same character, and that’s the point

Emi isn’t Harry Bosch by any stretch. She’s a different person with a different history and, presumably, a different way of working. But she’s taking over the Bosch function inside The Lincoln Lawyer, and whatever the writers decide to do with that makes her spinoff considerably more interesting than a standard procedural offshoot.

Connelly is involved in the show. That’s the reassurance here. It seems likely the character will land with the right touch for this TV universe rather than reading as a rights-workaround invented in a conference room.

Season 5 is the audition

Viewers got a moment with Emi. Now they get a season. Smulders has joined The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 in a much larger capacity, across 10 episodes.

Ten episodes is enough runway to build a character from scratch and enough time for an audience to decide whether they’d follow her anywhere. The show will use it to push viewers toward caring about the spinoff.

Expect the season to give Emi stories she anchors herself, not just scenes where she reacts to Mickey. Expect the sibling relationship to be built deliberately, over time, as the two of them move through a season together.

What we don’t know yet

Almost everything. There’s very little information about what’s coming, and Emi barely had time to make a first impression before the credits rolled.

Still, she’s interesting on paper, and she’s occupying a genuinely important position in this universe. If Netflix wants a real franchise out of The Lincoln Lawyer rather than one show that ends and one that hopes for the best, season 5 has to make her stick.

Mickey Haller, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, remains the main character of a series that’s now ending. The whole enterprise is being handed to a woman who wasn’t in a single book.

Netflix has 10 episodes to convince you she belongs there.
