Netflix axed The Boroughs on June 17. Less than 24 hours later, Nielsen’s streaming ratings showed the sci-fi series racked up 1.2 billion minutes of viewing in the U.S. during the week of May 18-24, its premiere week. The timing is brutal.
The eight-episode series, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, debuted on May 21 and immediately became one of Netflix’s biggest launches of the year. At a total runtime of six hours and 15 minutes, the 1.2 billion minutes translates to roughly 3.2 million U.S. views in a single week.
That U.S. figure accounts for about 57% of the 5.6 million worldwide views Netflix reported for the show’s first week, though the streamer and Nielsen use different data collection methods. By its 21st day on the platform, The Boroughs had accumulated 117.7 million views globally.
Strong numbers, canceled anyway
The Boroughs finished second on Nielsen’s overall streaming originals chart for the week, behind fellow Netflix newcomer Nemesis, which posted 1.31 billion minutes. Amazon’s The Boys came third with 1.07 billion minutes during its series finale week. Netflix held three of the top four spots overall, with documentary The Crash adding another 1.18 billion minutes.
It was the first time since March that Netflix had a scripted show atop the streaming charts, when Beauty in Black posted 1.36 billion minutes.
The show also holds a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and 79% on the Popcornmeter. Reports indicate the Duffer Brothers had already been discussing ideas for a second and potentially third season before the cancellation.
The audience skewed older
One detail from the Nielsen data may help explain the cancellation despite strong raw numbers. Roughly 57% of The Boroughs’ viewing came from audiences aged 50 and older. That demographic profile matters to Netflix, which weighs audience composition alongside total viewership when making renewal decisions. A show drawing heavily from an older audience may not align with the platform’s broader subscriber acquisition strategy, even when the raw minutes are competitive.
The premise leaned into that audience. The series follows residents of a seemingly perfect retirement community who discover a supernatural threat lurking beneath the surface and band together to confront it. Critics described it as part Stranger Things, part Cocoon, part Thursday Murder Club.
What happens next is unclear
Whether the strong Nielsen numbers and audience backlash change anything remains an open question. The show’s cancellation drew immediate criticism from fans who felt the series hadn’t been given enough time to find its audience. All eight episodes are still streaming on Netflix.
