Zidane is coming back. Not in a remake, not in a mobile gacha cameo, but in a brand new Final Fantasy game built out of pixels.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches 22 October, and it’s pulling the series back toward the look that made it famous in the first place. Pixel art. Dynamic camera angles. Pixelized 3D models that lean into drama rather than photorealism.
And somewhere in that roster sits the thief from Alexandria.
Why Zidane is the name that matters here
Final Fantasy 9 came out in 2000, the ninth mainline entry, and it dropped players into a war between nations with Zidane at the center of it. He kidnaps the princess as part of a scheme cooked up by a neighboring nation. Then the two of them join forces to take down her mother, Queen Brahne of Alexandria, and discover the dark forces at play stretch far past anything they’d suspected.
That setup still holds up 26 years later, which explains a lot about why the game keeps selling.
As of March 2025, Final Fantasy 9 has moved 8.9 million copies. It’s routinely named one of the greatest video games ever made, it hit both commercially and critically, and the re-releases and remasters have kept the audience growing instead of flattening out.
The remake still isn’t confirmed
Let’s be precise about this, because the rumor mill has been loud. A modern-day remake of Final Fantasy 9 has not been confirmed. What has been confirmed is an animated series adaptation, currently in development by Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios.
So the Zidane news isn’t the remake news. It’s something else entirely, and arguably more interesting.
Sixteen mainline entries means sixteen different candidates for someone’s favorite Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy 9 just happens to be the one a very large group of people land on.
What Resonance is actually pitching
The official synopsis lays out the hook plainly: “Travel with companions bound by fate and call on Visions to aid you in battle to uncover the truth behind a force that threatens to bring everything to ruin.”
Square Enix describes the game as delivering a visually striking experience that feels both nostalgic and new, with those dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models doing the heavy lifting on making individual moments land harder.
Zidane isn’t arriving alone, either. A post on r/JRPG surfaced the 17 characters joining the roster, complete with their pixel-art designs.
The pull is the art style as much as the cast
Here’s the thing about a returning character in a franchise this size: most of them are fan service and everyone knows it. Zidane’s different because the pixel-art treatment is the point. Seeing him rendered in the style the series left behind is the whole appeal, not a bonus on top of it.
Fans have missed that look. Resonance is betting they’ve missed it enough to show up on 22 October.
Seventeen characters, one thief from Alexandria, and a war that starts with a kidnapping.
