A prison window. Orange jumpsuit. Lucia staring out at nothing.
You’ve seen that shot before, in the very first GTA 6 trailer back in 2023. On August 26, it turned up again in leaked footage, and the internet spent the day deciding Rockstar had quietly made its own game uglier.
The leak came from Cyberleek, a person or group that has been posting daily GTA 6 leaks online since last week. Earlier today they posted another one. This time it was different from their past drops: Wednesday’s video featured what appears to be the game’s prologue, showing flashbacks of Lucia’s life and finally catching up with her in prison.
We’re not spoiling any of the new information or details revealed in today’s prologue leak. What matters for this particular argument is one sequence, the one first seen nearly three years ago.
The two versions of the same window
In the trailer, more orange sunlight pierces through the glass. It’s moodier, more cinematic, the kind of lighting that gets a shot into a thumbnail.
The newly leaked footage of that same moment has less dramatic lighting. No extremely bright orange sun glowing through the window.
Put them side by side and yes, at first glance, it reads as a downgrade. That’s exactly what happened.
The numbers on the pile-on
Comparisons started spreading, especially on Twitter, where engagement is rewarded with money. One post by (Not) Centro Leaks has over 2.5 million views and 400+ replies. Another, from Lo-Ping, has 2.1 million views and 1,300 shares.
Lo-Ping’s post says “Oh YUCK” and shows screenshots from the trailer and the leak next to each other. That’s the whole post. Two images and two words.
Others aren’t even making the claim outright, just asking people whether they think GTA 6’s visuals have been downgraded, which works out to the same thing. The end result is a lot of people passing these images around and claiming GTA 6’s trailers lied, and that Rockstar has substantially nerfed the game’s visuals ahead of its launch in November.
So has it been downgraded
Nobody can tell you that. Not us, and not anyone on Twitter claiming to know the truth.
Start with the obvious hole: we don’t know how Cyberleek even got their hands on the leaked footage. The build these leaks come from might not have all the lighting effects turned on, or might be running different settings than what will be seen in the final game.
Then there’s the recording itself. We don’t know what HDR settings the build is using, or how any of it was captured. People have pointed out that some of the previous Cyberleek clips looked like HDR footage that had been improperly encoded and uploaded online.
And we don’t know if this new leak comes from the same build as the past leaks or a different, older version of the game.
The boring explanation nobody wants
Here’s another possibility that doesn’t make for a good screenshot. Rockstar may have decided the overly bright sun and cinematic look in the trailer didn’t fit the scene, and gone for a more realistic, flat look instead.
That’s a guess. So is everything else being shouted about today.
None of this is confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two. It’s leaked footage of unknown origin, from a build of unknown vintage, compared against a marketing trailer. Those are three different kinds of thing and the comparison treats them as one.
What the rest of the leaks have looked like
It’s worth remembering that so much of the leaked footage has looked impressive and matched what we’ve seen in trailers and screenshots released officially by Rockstar Games.
One window doesn’t overturn that. But one window is what fits in a tweet.
So before you go panicking or spreading misinformation, take a moment and chill. The gap between “this frame looks different” and “Rockstar lied to you” is enormous, and right now it’s being crossed by people with no more information than you have.
Tomorrow might settle it
Netflix’s GTA 6 extended look event is tomorrow. There’s a chance this same scene turns up there.
If it does, the interesting part won’t be whether it’s pretty. It’ll be which of the two versions it looks like.
