A single minute on the minimap now takes six real seconds. That’s the whole discovery, and it changes more about Grand Theft Auto VI than it sounds like it should.
Do the math and an in-game day in Grand Theft Auto VI runs 144 minutes. Grand Theft Auto V’s full day lasted 48 real-world minutes. Rockstar has tripled it.
The receipt is a timestamp on a minimap
The number comes from a user on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors who watched the footage frame by frame and counted.
“Based on the seventh leak: at the 55-second mark, the in-game time shows 7:29 AM (minimap),” the user shared. “At the 1:01 mark, it changes to 7:30 AM. That means one in-game minute passes in six seconds of real time, which would make the full day-night cycle 144 minutes, three times longer than GTA V’s 48-minute cycle.”
No insider source. No anonymous developer. Just a clock, a stopwatch and some division.
Rockstar has had a rough few weeks
Leaks have been landing on the studio again, covering everything from full-frontal nudity to what could be Grand Theft Auto VI’s ending. Rockstar is dealing with a lot of it now, and it's unclear how much damage has been done.
But fans pore over every inch of content that surfaces. That’s why we know considerably more about the game than we did this time last month.
Most of the plot is still a mystery. The open world isn’t. It’s expected to be the biggest and most immersive in gaming history, set across multiple states, and nobody has a real sense yet of how long it takes to drive from one edge of the map to the other.
A longer day is a confidence play
Here’s the part worth sitting with. Stretching a day to 144 minutes only works if there’s something to do while the sun moves.
We already know the map is meant to be full to the brim: accessible interiors, plenty of activities, sprawling nightlife. A tripled clock is Rockstar saying it has the content to fill those hours.
And it quietly fixes something players have complained about for years.
The comments section agrees, loudly
With the launch three months out, fans went to the Reddit comments to work through what a longer cycle means for how the game actually feels to play.
“Good, I don’t like it when it goes from day to night really quickly,” one comment reads. Another agreed: “48-min cycle in 5 was way too fast.”
Someone else got at the aesthetic argument. “That’s a genuinely awesome amount of time,” the comment read. “I did notice in the leaks compared to the sunsets in RDR2, it was lasting a lot longer. At least now we can actually appreciate and take in the stunning visuals instead of basically sitting about doing nothing.”
That last line is the whole thing. In GTA V, a sunset was a lighting transition you drove through. At six seconds per in-game minute, it becomes something you can pull over for.
What the clock tells you about the ambition
A day/night cycle is a design decision that reveals what a studio thinks players will do with their time.
Forty-eight minutes assumes you’re moving between missions. A hundred and forty-four assumes you might stop.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November 2026, and somewhere in there is a two-hour and 24-minute day that Rockstar built expecting you to spend it.
