Squadron 42 was supposed to ship in Q4 2026. It’s now aimed at Q2 2027, and the reason is a single date on Rockstar’s calendar.
Henry Cavill has been Superman and he’s been Geralt. His next big role is in space, in a game that just blinked first.
The chairperson put it in writing
This isn’t a rumor or a datamine. Chris Roberts, chairperson, said so himself in a letter, and he didn’t dress it up.
“At CitizenCon 2024 we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE. But much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had twelve years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it (we started Squadron 42 development in 2014 as 2013 was opening studios, hiring people and getting the Hangar module out for Star Citizen) launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA6. While GTA6 isn’t launching on PC this November, pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it, not leaving a lot of room for other coverage,” Roberts said.
Note the detail he slips in there. Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t even coming to PC in November, the platform Squadron 42 actually lives on, and Roberts still doesn’t want to be anywhere near it. That’s how much oxygen he expects one game to take.
November 19, 2026 is a black hole
Rockstar’s date is November 19, 2026, and publishers have been quietly stepping around it for months. Jason and Lucia are going to own the conversation, and every other release that week becomes a footnote.
If you watched Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix, none of this reads as paranoia. The game pulls the best of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V into one sandbox that genuinely looks worth getting lost in. Getting out of the way is the sane call, and not just for Squadron 42.
The game isn’t the problem
Here’s the part that makes the delay sting a little less. Squadron 42 appears to be ready. The team has spent the last few years polishing a game that was already feature complete, so this is a scheduling decision, not a development one.
The cast reads like a casting director’s fever dream. Cavill, Andy Serkis, Gillian Anderson and Gary Oldman, and that’s naming only a few. The spiritual successor to Wing Commander is built around aerial combat, first person action and FPS puzzle sections, which is an ambitious spread for a game that’s spent this long in the oven.
What 2027 has to prove
Between now and Q2 2027 there’s room for more gameplay, and Squadron 42 needs it. Mass Effect and Starfield are the obvious measuring sticks, and clearing them is the difference between a curiosity and something you’re still playing long after the credits roll on Grand Theft Auto VI. Star Wars Zero Company and its strong reviews set a recent bar too.
So the finished space opera sits on a shelf with four A-listers inside it, lights off, waiting for Jason and Lucia to clear the room.
