Darkseid ran. That’s the whole argument, right there.

When Perpetua broke free of the Source Wall, the Lord of Apokolips didn’t posture or monologue or start assembling a war council. He bolted for the Ghost Sector, the one pocket of reality where her power couldn’t reach him, and he waited it out. The guy who treats conquering worlds as a Tuesday hobby found a corner and hid in it.

DC has no shortage of threats. On the low end you’ve got the Rogues plotting bank jobs. On the high end you’ve got cosmic beings who want to enslave every living thing and remake the universe to their taste. Darkseid usually gets treated as the ceiling of that scale, the omega, the one whose arrival means everybody suits up. And that reputation isn’t wrong so much as it’s incomplete.

He’s a big scary fish. He’s just not the biggest fish in the ocean.

She built a universe on purpose so it would never finish

The DC creation myth is, charitably, a mess. But a few load-bearing pieces have hardened into canon. The Source of All Things came first, the most powerful being there is, the one everything else descends from. Among its earliest creations were the Hands, sixth dimensional celestial beings sent out with one job: build multiverses.

Perpetua was one of them. Then she learned the catch. Finish your multiverse, and you die with it.

So she cheated. She built an incomplete reality and shaped it into a wheel that would rotate forever between Crisis and Rebirth, throwing off energy that fed her. The universe we’ve been reading about for decades is a perpetual motion machine designed to keep its architect alive.

It worked. It also broke every rule the Source had laid down.

The prison that only slowed her down

When the Source figured out what she’d done, it sent the Cosmic Raptor to lock her in the Source Wall. Most villains would call that the end of the story.

Perpetua called it a waiting room. Encased in the wall, she schemed, and eventually she worked her way out through other people: Barbatos, the Batman Who Laughs and Lex Luthor, each one feeding her the power she needed to crack the wall open from the inside.

And then Darkseid packed up and left town.

The Anti-Life Equation is her signing bonus

Here’s the detail that reframes everything. The only thing keeping Darkseid from total dominion is the Anti-Life Equation. Get it, and he rolls over the New Gods and the heroes without breaking stride. He has spent his entire existence chasing it, and it keeps slipping away.

Perpetua has it. She also doesn’t care about it.

She handed the Anti-Life Equation to Mobius to get him on her roster. The great white whale of Darkseid’s existence, the thing he’d burn a thousand worlds to hold for five minutes, and she used it as a hiring incentive. A perk. Sign here, here’s your parking spot and the equation that unmakes free will.

It took a Batman infused with Dr. Manhattan to stop her

There’s no power on this side of the Source Wall that can beat Perpetua. She’s the creator of the multiverse the DC universe sits inside. Which makes what happened to her almost funny, if you’re not her.

The Darkest Knight, formerly the Batman Who Laughs, got there by stacking advantages that shouldn’t exist together. He took the last of Dr. Manhattan’s energy. He got hold of the remnants of the Source Wall that had held her the first time. And he put her back in.

Imprisoned. Not destroyed. Those are different words and comics know the difference.

So she’s out there, contained for now, waiting the way she waited before. And somewhere in the Ghost Sector, the most feared tyrant in the DC universe is keeping very still and very quiet, hoping she doesn’t remember his name.
