One season every 12 months. That was the plan for HBO’s Harry Potter series, and it’s now off the table.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the shift, and the good news buried in it is that you won’t be waiting a full two years between seasons either. The gap lands somewhere in between.
The timing of this isn’t subtle. Reports surfaced just days ago that the second season of Harry Potter was facing unexpected production delays, and now the CEO is on record walking back the annual cadence.
What Bloys said
Bloys told Deadline that production will do its best to deliver new seasons as quickly as possible, but that holding a strict 12-month release cycle would be difficult.
His exact words:
“We are trying as hard as possible to return as quickly as we can. There won’t be two full years between seasons, but we are making a great effort to keep that window as short as possible.”
Read that plainly and you get the shape of things. Each new season will premiere roughly a year and a bit after the previous one, and the gap won’t stretch past two years. The original one-season-per-year vision is proving difficult to realize.
What’s set in stone
The first season carries the official title Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It runs eight episodes and adapts the story of the first book.
HBO has made it clear that the goal is for each season to adapt a different book in the series. Season two is already in development, which is why that delay chatter matters more than it would for a show still figuring out whether it gets a second year.
And the part that hasn’t moved: the Harry Potter series is set to premiere on HBO Max this Christmas.
So the first season arrives on schedule. It’s everything after that where the calendar gets a little looser than anyone was promised.
