Din Djarin’s friends throw him a party, and everyone starts telling stories about him. That’s the whole framing device of LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, now streaming on Disney+, and it’s the only genuinely new material in a 45-minute special that otherwise exists to walk you back through ground you’ve already covered.
Which is fine. It’s just not much.
What you’re actually getting here
This is a tribute to and recap of all three seasons of the live-action series, with The Book of Boba Fett tossed in for good measure. Various characters recount Din (Gavin Hammon) and Grogu’s (David Acord) exploits, and the special leans hard into the goofy LEGO flourish while doing it.
Fans of the show should get a kick out of watching those events retold and warped through the cutesy plastic lens. There are more than a few chuckles as the special revisits the big moments and lampoons them with self-aware humor. And the visual gags land, because this is a universe where characters move like clunky toys and everything is built from bricks.
It’s a silly, entertaining way to relive the original series. Nothing more complicated than that.
The recast nobody wanted
Pedro Pascal isn’t in the voice cast, and that’s the biggest knock against the special. Hammon is fine as the bounty hunter, but he doesn’t sound particularly close to Pascal.
Luckily, the extended flashbacks get narrated by other characters, which leaves plenty of room for the returning cast to ham it up. Amy Sedaris is back as Peli Motto, Bill Burr as Miggs Mayfield, Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano and Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon. Only Mando himself and a handful of minor characters have been recast.
Morrison’s Boba Fett turns out to be an unexpected highlight. The special hands him an inflated sense of self-importance and the actor runs with it. Frankly, The Book of Boba Fett might have been a better show had it done the same.
Watch who gets quietly left out
The compression to a modest 45-minute runtime creates its own kind of commentary. Cara Dune gets neither an introduction nor a single speaking line, which tells you where Lucasfilm currently stands on that particular embattled character.
Much of Season 3 also gets glossed over, which is probably for the best. Here’s how Samantha Nelson assessed that season in her April 21, 2023 review: “While The Mandalorian continues to deliver excellent action and beautiful settings, this season felt pulled in too many directions as the focus shifted from Din Djarin and Grogu to Bo-Katan and her quest to retake Mandalore. Season 3 also spent too much time connecting other Star Wars stories, but an outstanding finale hints at the plans to get back to the basics in season 4.”
The result is a cohesive picture of Mando’s journey that doesn’t get tangled in extraneous details. Exactly what you want out of a recap.
The release timing makes no sense
Why Disney didn’t put this out before The Mandalorian and Grogu hit theaters is beyond me. You’d think they’d want to throw their cowboy hat into the ring alongside the many YouTube recaps of the series, especially since this one has the advantage of being both in-depth and embellished.
To be fair, though, The Mandalorian and Grogu is such an aggressively straightforward and simple film that no recap was ever really necessary.
The special it could have been
What this doesn’t do is blaze any new ground with the character. It’s hard not to wonder what might have been possible had the special told a wholly new and original story set within the world of The Mandalorian. A lost mission set in the gaps between seasons, say, instead of adventures we’ve already watched.
Lucasfilm has dropped the ball here for years. The promised Mandalorian spinoff novel never materialized, and the tie-in comics settled for adapting the series rather than expanding it. There’s room to dig deeper.
But who knows? If this special proves popular enough, maybe we get a proper LEGO Mandalorian spinoff. There’s no shortage of potential.
Where this leaves the series
At this point it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ll ever see The Mandalorian Season 4 on Disney+. The tepid response to The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters shows this branch of the franchise doesn’t carry the weight it once did.
It’s entirely possible that LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is the last hurrah for this series, with Din and his little buddy relegated to Dave Filoni’s Mando-verse crossover movie. If that’s how it goes, fans are left with a fun but ultimately forgettable tribute to a show that was once the bright center of the Star Wars universe.
The special does work as a small coda, at least. It spends its runtime counting up how many friends and found family members Din Djarin collected along the way, which is a warmer note to go out on than a bounty hunter in beskar probably deserves.
