In Brief:
- Fenris Creations is developing EVE Frontier (official site), a blockchain-enabled space survival game rooted in its experience from EVE Online.
- The game incorporates real-world economic elements, allowing players to trade in-game assets for actual value.
- CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson emphasizes the importance of balance in agency and the strategic gameplay mechanics shaped by resource management.
Fenris Creations taps EVE Online legacy for EVE Frontier
Fenris Creations is deep in the development of its new space survival game, EVE Frontier, leveraging insights gained from over two decades running EVE Online. The project has been in the works since 2021 and will incorporate blockchain technology to enable real-world transactions.
CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson believes understanding player dynamics is critical. Highlighting a conversation from early 2017 with Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, he noted the evolution of AI in gaming and how EVE Online serves as a testing ground for AI agents. Pétursson views the game as an environment where agents can develop properties like long-term memory and resistance to manipulation.
“EVE is probably the best approximation to test and train agent properties in the broad topic of alignment other than doing it in the real world,” he said. According to him, the game rewards trust and honesty, emerging from players’ reliance on one another rather than from an imposed morality system.
Transition to EVE Frontier
In shifting to EVE Frontier, Fenris aims to solve issues from EVE Online, particularly around real-money trading. Unlike its predecessor, which prohibits such activity, EVE Frontier will facilitate transactions where players can buy and sell in-game assets with real-world value. This change aims to integrate these economic elements into the very fabric of the game’s ecosystem.
Pétursson outlined that actions in EVE Frontier will consume in-game resources, specifically fuel. “If people can multiply themselves endlessly, with no cost to them, then obviously they would run amok,” he said. This fuel mechanism is intended to encourage alliances and skill-building over simply creating multiple accounts.
Unique gameplay experiences
While EVE Online is recognized for its complex social frameworks, EVE Frontier will alter gameplay by emphasizing precise navigation and resource management within a high-fidelity physics environment. Players must adeptly maneuver their ships through spatial challenges, using natural features for protection against environmental hazards and enemies.
Pétursson acknowledged that even sophisticated AI systems struggle against human players in these complex scenarios. Yet, this AI competition may change with future advancements.
As EVE Frontier enters its seventh three-month testing phase, the universe will reset upon completion, leading to a new version of the game. The transition from Sui testnet to mainnet remains a crucial milestone as the team continues refining gameplay mechanics.
“Only then will we see how well Fenris has distilled its learnings from EVE Online into a game that allows AI agents to expand what players can do while remaining subject to the costs and constraints that sustain the game’s economy,” Pétursson said.
EVE Frontier is currently offering a free trial, with permanent Founders Access starting at $40.
