In Brief:
- Portal announced the beta launch of Gen8, its prompt-to-play 2D game engine, in an Oct. 8 post on X.
- Users describe a game, pick a template and generate a playable build they can keep iterating on. An open beta window runs Oct. 1-31.
- Gen8 is the third of four Portal 2.0 products to reach users. GameHub, the publishing and monetization layer, has yet to ship.
Portal announced the beta launch of Gen8 on Oct. 8, saying in a post on X, “We are thrilled to officially announce the Beta launch of our prompt-to-play 2D game engine!”
Gen8 turns a written description into a playable 2D game. “Describe your game, pick a template, and generate a playable version that you can keep iterating on,” the post said. The engine is live at portalgaming.com/gen8, where it carries a beta tag alongside Discover, My games, Leaderboard and Top creators sections.

Portal’s events page lists a “Portal Gen8: Open Beta for All” window running Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. The main site ties use of the tools to rewards: users generate assets or games to earn Shards, which can be spent on gift cards in the Portal Shop. Game jams in August and September each carried a 50,000 Shard prize pool.
Third of four products
Gen8 arrived third on Portal’s roadmap. It was announced as GameGen on April 18, when the company relaunched as Portal 2.0 under a “Day 1” banner and named four products: Studio, GameRouter, GameGen and GameHub.
Studio, the agent workspace, shipped first. Creators pull in agents from Claude, OpenAI or OpenClaw, assign them roles and prompt for characters, tiles and sprites, previewing the results before committing them to a project. Guided milestones carry a build to release, either exported to an outside engine or built on Gen8.
The routing layer, Nexus, went live in late July at nexus.portalgaming.com after being teased since June under the working name GameRouter. It sends prompts to specialized models for code, sprites and audio behind a single API key and one credit balance covering 2D, 3D, voice, music and NPC tooling. A fourth product, GameHub, has yet to appear.
From 20 testers to open beta
Portal ran a Gen8 Creators Program from Aug. 1-31 and selected 20 creators for early access before the broader rollout. “We’re selecting 20 creators to get early access, create games alongside us, and directly shape the future of our dev tools,” the company said in an August post on X. Seats were limited, and applications were accepted or declined at Portal’s discretion.
The company has described Gen8’s purpose as reclaiming the weeks indie teams spend on basic movement, UI and off-the-shelf asset packs before a prototype is playable.
A crowded field
The launch lands one day after Google opened Playground, its own experimental prompt-to-play platform, on Oct. 7. Creation access there is rolling out in batches. Unity’s Spark is in testing, with a closed beta expected.
The reset behind it
Gen8’s arrival follows a year of reinvention. Portal spent its first two years as an interoperability and liquidity layer for web3 gaming before merging with BLIFE Protocol in late 2025. The April relaunch put Benjamin Charbit, a former Ubisoft director on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, in charge of the AI-focused rebuild, with backing from Animoca Brands.
Portal has said revenue from its AI tools is earmarked for regular buybacks of the PORTAL token. Holders are promised early access, advanced tool usage rights and voting rights.
The launch page keeps its own counsel on maturity. Next to the Gen8 logo sits a single word: beta.
