AMD is putting up to $5 billion into Anthropic. And Anthropic is going to hand a good chunk of that money right back to AMD for chips. If that sounds like a loop, it is.
The chipmaker announced the deal Wednesday, and the shape of it tells you more than the headline number does. Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 GPUs, running on AMD’s new Helios rack-scale system, according to the announcement and an earlier report from The Wall Street Journal.
The money moves in a circle
Here’s the part worth sitting with. AMD isn’t just selling Anthropic hardware. It’s investing in the company that’s buying the hardware, then buying that company’s product in return.
The deal comes with a “multi-year engineering collaboration,” and AMD will use Anthropic's Claude across its own software development, engineering and product development. So AMD ships the chips, funds the buyer and becomes a customer of the buyer’s model. Every arrow points at both of them.
“By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” Tom Brown, Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer, said in the press release.
Anthropic is buying compute from everyone
This isn’t a one-off. Anthropic has now signed AI infrastructure deals with Google, Broadcom and Amazon. It’s reached data center arrangements with SpaceX and TeraWulf. And there are rumors it could land an agreement with Meta too.
That’s a company collecting capacity from anyone willing to sell it. The AMD arrangement doesn’t stand out because it’s large. It stands out because AMD is also the one writing the investment check.
When the chips actually show up
Don’t expect any of this running soon. The two companies plan to deploy the first gigawatt in the first half of 2027, building on the SpaceX and TeraWulf data center deals Anthropic already has in hand. The second gigawatt has no public date attached.
Watch the calendar, not the dollar figure. The number to hold AMD to is that first gigawatt landing in the first half of 2027. Everything else is a promise with a press release stapled to it.
